Invalid Answer for a Drag and Drop Interaction?

Oct 15, 2013

Hi folks,

I'm looking for some help with an interaction. (My apologies if this has been asked and answered before. I could not find a prior post on it.)

I am building a drag and drop interaction where there are six drag objects and three drop targets. The learner will hover over each drag object to see what it is about, and then drag and drop on the target. When I try this out in Preview of the slide or the scene, I get an "Invalid Answer: You must complete the question before submitting" error message. I've worked on troubleshooting this, but I can't figure it out, yet. Suggestions?

Hi Steve,

I THINK it's fixed, but be sure to double check. I removed all the trigger you'd set to change the state of the drag objects to hover. The hover state is automatically applied, so you don't need those triggers. And apparently adding them confused SL!

Please shout out with any questions.

Hi I have the same problem with 3 interactions, but I don't have a hover state on either of them. They are a gap fill as a pick one. I have done this before and it worked perfectly but I can't seem to figure out what I have done different with these 3. Also one of them won't preview at all?! What could stop the preview? (first picture)

I have only included one interaction as they are all doing the same thing.

Thanks

Inka

Hi Inka,

You'll want to check the trigger order for this slide - the "submit interaction" trigger is executing before the triggers to adjust the state of your pick many options and therefore they'll never be executed indicating the user answered the question.

As far as the "preview" issue - I didn't see it in this file. Could you share another slide that is causing that problem so that we can take a look?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Ashley. Yes, of course the trigger order sorted that. Feel a bit silly now for not seeing that myself! I still have a problem with the one slide that won't preview though. It is the second slide in this course. Also, I can't move from 1.1 to slide 1.2, maybe it is the same issue with the preview. I have checked the triggers in the Correct and incorrect feedback layer and they are set to next slide but won't actually go to next slide. I have also tried it with the slide name but it made no difference. I did copy and paste slide 1.1 into a new project and it seemed to preview then. Hope this is not something really silly again that I am missing!

Thanks in advance.

PS I don't seem to be able to upload the file now. Is there a limit? I reduced it to three slides, can I only send one slide at a time? Is there another way of sending the file to you?

Hi Inka,

Trigger order is one that has stumped us all at some time or another - so no worries there!

In regards to your preview, you'll want to check that you're previewing the entire project and not just one slide or else the course won't be able to advance to the next slide.

The forums have around a 20 mb limit for uploads, so you may be running into that issue. If you're able to strip out other elements that are large in terms of a file size, and the behavior continues you could share that version here. You mentioned copy/pasting it into a new project - so you may just want to begin by trying to import the entire .story file into a new project as described here and I'd also steer clear of copy/paste from one project to another.

If that is still not working, let us know and I'll be able to send you directions for how to share the file with me directly with a larger upload amount.

Hi Ashley I have imported the slides into a new project and it is still the same. I have now taken another slide off the version I couldn't load above, so now it is only two slides. The first one is the one that won't move on to the 2nd slide and the 2nd slide is the one that won't preview. Unfortunately I still can't upload it and I can't strip it of anything else.

I have also used the default player as I thought maybe me making changes to the player has confused things, but still the same.

Could you please let me know how else I can share it with you.

Many thanks again.

Hi Ashley

I have just uploaded the file for you on the link you send me. Many thanks. Could you please reply here though, as I will otherwise only get your reply tomorrow, if I'm lucky.

I have only send the one slide that won't preview as I realised that the continue button problem was only a problem as the slide won't preview if I set the feedback slides to link to another slide they work fine. Could the problem be because the variables are numbers rather than text, could that affect the slide to load?

Thanks again.

Hi Inka,

I replied in the case, but also wanted to share the info here as you mentioned not being able to access your email.

It seems that there was some corruption associated with the file in relation to the slide masters and the trigger associated with the 67.5 cm text entry.

I was able to see the file preview by importing it into a new project which resolved the issue with the slide masters and then I had to recreate the data entry associated with text box 67.5cm and the triggers. I emailed you a copy of your .story file updated with those changes.
Also, please review these directions on how to import a Storyline project into a new project.

Hope that helps!

Hi Inka,

It was just the 67.5 data entry trigger - I'm not sure why, but when we were narrowing down the issue we isolated it to that one by first removing the "incorrect" layer and then it all published as normal. So back on that layer, went one by one removing each element until it stopped previewing again - that's how we determined it was the 67.5 data entry element. I was able to remove it completely and recreate it in the file I attached for you - and that version previewed normally. No matter what, you'll also want to import that slide into a new project - as there was also an issue with the slide masters.

Corruption within a file or element is a hard thing to pin down, but you'll want to ensure you're following along with these guidelines to prevent odd behavior:

Hi Inka,

I'm not sure that it was one particular issue - but there were a lot of them in that file, and all demonstrating some odd behavior. I'd be sure to only include slide masters in your project that you'll be using and leave out the extras which could weigh down the file or contribute to some undesired effects.
