Invalid Answer Layer Auto-Advances

Feb 05, 2019

I have a large question bank that's used in an online Storyline assessment. It was working fine when initially tested a month ago.

Now, however, if you click Submit without seeing the answer, the "invalid answer" message goes to the next slide when you click OK, rather than allowing you to answer the question as intended.

Since this is a default SL message, I have no idea how to control this behavior. I know you can edit the text, but how do we get the OK button to hide the layer as intended and NOT jump to next slide.

Suggestions? Work-arounds?

Hey E D! That definitely sounds strange. I have a few more questions about your file to help me narrow this down:

  • Does this happen on any question slide, or just certain slides in particular?
  • Do you have Correct and Incorrect feedback layers on your question slides?

With your permission, we can take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. We'll delete it when we're done troubleshooting. If that works for you, you can upload your file privately to our support team here. We'll give it a test and let you know what we find!

Hi Tom,

I took a look at ED's case and see that my colleague Anna identified that the questions were set to No Feedback, and therefore advancing immediately upon clicking the submit button even if the learner hadn't answered anything. You can read more about feedback settings and how to add those to your quiz questions here.

If you're still running into trouble with the course, we'd love to take a look at your .story file to investigate further. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.

I’ll delete it when I’m done troubleshooting.

Hi there

I seem to be having the same issue. The feedback layers on the questions are set to move on at the end of the timeline of that layer. However - if a learner does not submit an answer, gets the "invalid answer" message - the slide automatically moves on to the next question even if the learner has not submitted an answer. This totally messes up my question numbering as well as this is set by a number variable so that we can have randomised questions with correct numbering.

I have a different course which was built in the same way earlier this year which when I check on the old review link does not have this error but when I open the build file and preview - this error occurs.

This feels like it has become an issue after a recent update as we have not experienced this previously.

Please can you give me an upload link so that you can have a look at the files to see what is happening.

Many thanks

Hi Alena.  Thanks for those details; it sounds like you're seeing behavior similar to a bug we have documented where the slide advances after clicking "Ok" on the Invalid Answer prompt.  If you'd like to share your course with us so we can confirm and include your setup in our bug report, send it over using this link.  Thank you!
