ipad app layer display issue

Aug 15, 2014

Hi,

I have published some draft storyline content online, testing different screen sizes for display on PC and ipad, and the outputted file displays incorrectly in the ios articulate player.

The problem is that content on layers displays even when the layer is changed - the display is correct on desktop browsers - chrome and firefox at least. I have hidden content on other layers when the layer is changed.

The problem can be seen on the following page: (click on the lunch button)

Is there something i'm doing wrong either in production or export, or is there a bug in the ios player?

Hi Ant,

Thanks for sharing the link here and I'm sorry to hear about the odd behavior. I tested it on my iPad mini running iOS7 and using the most recent version of the mobile player and saw some overlapping text which is what I believe you're referring to. Without seeing the original .story file, I'd like to have you check into the following things:

  • What update of Storyline did you use to publish this? We're currently on Update 6.
  • Are you following along with these guidelines for creating your Storyline files?
  • Have you checked the individual layer properties to see the settings for hiding the other slide layers?
  • Have you looked on each layer to see if individual elements are not hidden using the eye icon and therefore showing through?
  • There is a known issue described here about the base layer objects appearing even when hidden, and since I'm unsure if the object remnants I'm seeing are on the base layer I figured it was worth sharing.

If you'd like to share your .story file here we're happy to take a look. You can upload it using the paper clip icon to the forums and please keep in mind there is around a 20 mb limit for forum uploads so you may have to strip it down to that particular slide or sections.

Thanks for getting back to me.

In reply to your suggestions above:

I am using the most up to date version of storyline.

I checked the guidelines you linked to and I haven't complicated things by using external drives (although this info is useful for the future)

I have ticked the box 'hide other slide layers' on each layer.

I have hidden the elements with the eye icon.

I am reading but not entirely understanding the known issue, I would suggest that there is a bug in the software rather than anything I have introduced myself - as the project works & displays correctly on a PC browser.

I enclose my storyline files, if you could look at them I would much appreciate it - this is an issue which is affecting a whole project - every file displays this problem.

Thank you for your help

Hi Ant,

Thanks for sharing your file, and my apologies for missing it earlier this week. The issue is an issue within Storyline, not necessarily your PC - but we don't have a fix for it yet, only the suggested workarounds.

I took a look at the file you shared, and published it here. Since you weren't publishing for Tin Can API, but using the publish to LMS option, I removed the publish for the mobile player - and only did the HTML5 output. I didn't notice any layers overlapping - and the only thing that looked off was the layer titled Context 1 from the 1.2 Main menu slide had duplicate bullets - but I see that on the .story file itself too. I see the behavior in a version I published for web here and accessing it within the mobile player and it seems to match the behavior mentioned. In the meantime I would suggest using the HTML5 output or following the other guidelines detailed in the article to:

  • Add a trigger to the layer that hides the base layer object(s) when the timeline starts.
  • Move the layer objects to a new slide, and configure the original trigger to jump to the new slide rather than showing a layer.

Thanks for your patience as I took a look at this.
