Is it possible to extract content from articulate mobile player?

Nov 15, 2014

I'm publishing partially confidential content (contradiction in terms, much?) via a membership site (ah!) on WordPress using LearnDash, WooCommerce and a few other things.

The site doesn't allow users to download the content unless they are using the Articulate Mobile Player app. Having an iPad myself to check I can see that there is no trivial way (from within the app or from iTunes) to extract downloaded content.

1) How is that on the Android side of things? Is it possible to extract .story content from within the app or through some other trivial means? (The project is bootstrapped with a shoestring budget, so there's no Android tablet in the near future for me to try this out on.)

2) How is the content stored within the app? (Or in other words, using non-trivial means, like (on iPad) going through the backup files or jailbreaking, how easy/difficult is it to get the content out?

This is not so much to prevent IP-related issues (the platform is free, all payments for content are strictly voluntary), but to (reasonably) ensure that the confidential parts are not easily shared in clone form.

Any insights much appreciated! :-)

Hello Kai!

There is not way for anyone to extract the actual .story file from any published output.

When you allow users to download the publish content for offline use on the mobile players, this will be stored within the Articulate mobile player, however it is not the .story file, only the published output.

However, once the content is stored in the Player, there is not a way to stop someone from doing a screenshot or something else with the published content. We recommend using  as little copyrighted information when publishing for offline viewing.

Hi Emily :-)

Thank you for your quick response!

I'm aware that it wouldn't be the .story file, and of course people can take screenshots etc.. But there's a difference (in my limited mind) between grabbing the whole published content folder, zipping it, and uploading it on some file sharing platform or taking a gazillion screenshots and then upload them.

I would just like to get a feel four how difficult or easy it would be to extract the whole folder of published content from the mobile players on either platform.

Thank you again for your kind support!
