Issue with file opening

May 13, 2020

Upon creating and completing updates to a project on 5/7/2020, I'm now getting a file error.  It first instructed me to make a new name for the file which I did but not its telling me that my file is corrupt and created with an earlier version of storyline which is I have not...I'm getting so tired of file errors - it is not helping and keeping me running behind on projects.  I'm in the final stages of uploading this to the LMS but now I can't because I can't even open the file to make changes.

So sorry for the trouble, Cali. I'm happy to help!

What causes the 'invalid or corrupt' error?

File corruption can happen in any software, and even when following all the recommended best practices. It could be from a power outage, not working locally, a computer crash, or even just the size of the project file since very large files have a higher risk of corrupting.

Next steps

It sounds like you face this error often so I'd like to nail down the root. Where do you typically save and publish your files? Are the files large?

For now, let's try these steps to see if we can recover the file in your temp files:

  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of the project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
