Issue with Serenity Template Major Point Slide

May 03, 2018

Thank you, Tom, for helping me see the trees for the forest last time I had an issue. I'm assuming this is a similar one where I just don't know where to look. I'm using the Serenity Template MAJOR POINT slide, and for some reason I can't see anything on my slide layers when I preview it. Not sure if I'm just not turning on the right switch to see it or not. There is no audio as of yet. The learner is supposed to click on the smiley face icon to go to the slide layer. All the pieces are on the slide layer, on the slide and in the timeline, but when I preview, all I see is the center shape and a piece of one of the icons from the base layer. I'm afraid the whole file may be corrupted, as it's getting to be a really big file (47,270 KB) and it's acting quirky on my laptop (2 GHz AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics, 64-bit OS, x64-based processor, 8GB RAM, running Windows 10). It did crash on me today, so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with that or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, Paula!  I had a look at your file and did a little tune up.  :)  Thanks for including it!

Here's what I did that helped:

  • For some reason, unchecking "hide objects on base layer" in your slide layer properties allowed all of the content on that layer to show.  I'm not sure why the funky slide master layout appeared there when the option was checked, but I'm looking into it.
  • I removed the triggers to set the icons to Visited.  Since Visited is a built-in state, it will work automatically when the object is clicked.  Triggering it when clicked is double the work for Storyline, and sometimes it doesn't work well.
  • I changed the trigger on the Continue button to change the state to Normal when the icons are clicked with conditions: IF the other two icons are Visited.  I had to create a trigger for each icon (since users might click them in a different order), and I added two conditions to each.  In the conditions, I only included the other two icons (not the one being clicked), because it won't become Visited until it's clicked.
  • I wasn't sure about when the icon text was supposed to appear, but I set each of the icon text boxes to an initial state of Hidden.  I also set the Continue button to an initial state of Disabled- that way you don't need a trigger to change it when the timeline starts.

Have a look at your file and see if it gets you closer to where you want to be!
