Issues when converting existing S1 files to S2

Dec 01, 2014

Is anyone else noticing issues when converting existing S1 files to S2?  I have converted a few existing files and have noticed several things that don't appear or work the same when published in S1. I am noticing the issues with the following:

  • Font spacing changes
  • Image effects - some shadow effects are totally different and some don't show in edit mode - only show when you Preview or Publish. (see attached file for some examples)
  • Timelines

I've had to convert some projects over to S2 to make edits/updates. Even though I may have only made an update to one slide, I am having to Preview each and  EVERY slide in the project to make sure it renders the same as it did when it was in S1 which is very frustrating and time consuming to have to fix so many slides even though NO changes were made to them other than the conversion.

The main thing I've noticed on the Timline is the Default slide setting being at 5 seconds now prevents you from clicking to the next slide before the 5 seconds is up. This is very frustrating on slides such as Title slides where this is no content but you still have to wait to click Next. Very frustrating to have to go back and edit all of these timelines.  I've also had issues with having to re-edit timing on some animations running slower than they were when in S1 but not a huge issue as compared to the others I've mentioned.

Thanks!

Kim

Hi Kim,

The text issue is related to how  Storyline 2 now handles text as described here.

In Articulate Storyline 1, restricted and locked navigation settings only affected the menu. In contrast, the navigation settings in Articulate Storyline 2 affect both the menu and the player buttons, making it much easier to control the overall navigation for your course. To learn how to restrict or lock navigation in Storyline 2, see this article.

As far as the shadows, we'd want to take a look at one of your SL1 files and upgrade it on our end to see the behavior. You can post the file here, or even a sample with a few images/slides.

Thanks for the info!
Due to the proprietary information on my courses, I will try to edit my existing S1 course to remove information and just keep the images that have been affected but it may be a day or two before I can get to it.

Regarding the S1 to S2 issues with the text, are there any other articles you all have noted when converting? I saw the Text article regarding the 1Pixel addition. If there are additional topics related to conversion it would be VERY helpful if there was a single location to access for S1 to S2 issues.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Kim,

You may want to look through the knowledge based articles here. Storyline 2 does have an all new text editor, so it'll handle things a bit differently and that pixel issue is what is mainly seen. If you're seeing something else we're happy to take a look.

I'll keep an eye out for your sample - and I also just wanted to let you know that when you reply via email your signature is included in the reply. You can edit that by clicking on "edit" below your reply to remove the information.

Hi Ashley,

I edited my S1 file to show only the image examples I was having issues with. I'm including two files: Th  S1 backup file and then the same file after converted to S2. If you look at the image shadows in Edit and Preview mode on the S1 file, they all look fine. However, on the converted to S2 file, the image shadows don't appear the same in Preview as they do in Edit. In addition, one of the shadows in Edit mode doesn't even appear on the slide but rather way to the right side of the slide.

Thanks for looking at this!

Hi Kim,

Thanks for sharing those two files. I saw the behavior you referred to in your files, by when I took your SL1 file and upgraded it myself to SL2 everything appeared the same in preview as it did on the slide while editing. I've attached a copy of that one for you here, please let me know if you're seeing this one ok.

I'd want to have you look into that you're working with local project files and following along with the other guidelines here for managing your project files as those are known causes of issues within .story files.

Hi Ashley, is there a macro or something that can be used to reduce the tediousness of resolving the timeline issue (when converting SL1 to SL2 with a locked navigation, the SL2 timeline must be manually shortened to .5 seconds to allow users to advance at will on EACH slide)? This is immensly frustrating when a course has several hundred slides.

Please and thank you,

Sarah
