Issues when updating existing Storyline 1 content in LMS using Storyline 2

Dec 05, 2014

I am currently having issues with updating an online tutorial uploaded to my Cornerstone LMS, published in Storyline 1, using the new Storyline 2. Is anyone else having these issues and if so how are you resolving this? We currently only have one Storyline 2 license but would like to purchase more if this can be resolved. Note- we have no issue with publishing a new Storyline 2 tutorial to the LMS, it's just updating previous versions.

Hi Corie,

If you receive an "Unable to acquire LMS API" error when launching Articulate content in your LMS, it may be caused by the version of Java that you have installed.

Some LMSes use a Java API object to load content. Since content created in Articulate does not require Java, please do the following:

*  Contact your LMS provider and ensure that your installed version of Java is compatible with the version of the LMS you are using.
*  Ensure that you have published your content properly as described in this article.

Please let us know if you need anything else.

Hi Corie,

Yes, if you're trying to overwrite courses in your LMS that were originally published with SL1, by uploading courses published in SL2 you're likely to run into issues as they are different versions of the product and include different elements for publishing and within the published output files.  I'd also recommend changing the LMS reporting information (such as title or identifier) when publishing your Articulate content created in SL2, so it's not using the same information as the original course published in SL1 and causing issues within the LMS.

Also, as a general FYI when you update (overwrite) existing course files in your LMS or web server, learners who previously started the course won't be able to resume where they left off. They'll start over at the first slide in the updated course. This is true even if both files were created in the same version of Storyline.

So there will never be an update for Storyline 2 that enables the output published files to be in the same format as Storyline1? This would allow your clients/users to update existing courses in their LMS and not cause issues for reporting and for existing/current tutorials that have automatic enrolments.

Hi Corie,

Since Storyline 2 added features and functionality that were not a part of Storyline 1, the published output will be structured differently than Storyline 1. I don't expect there to be an update that allows you to accomplish what you've mentioned here, but you're welcome to share your thoughts on that in the form of a feature request here.
