Issues with Stopping and skipping through slides or videos in Storyline 3

Sep 04, 2020

I am wondering if anyone can help? I cerated my first eLEarning module in Storyline 3 and there are a few issues when a learner watches the video:

The video progress bar doesn’t work correctly. For example, clicking the pause button doesn’t actually stop the video. If you can click on the actual video, it will pause and then click on it again to continue playing.

The other issue with this is if you pause the video and wait a little bit (approx. 1 min – I am guessing the length of the video), the course takes you back to the Steps page or if you are watching the Step 3 video, it will take you to the next page in the course so you wouldn’t have actually finished watching the entire video.

One time, the course went back to the Steps page but the audio from the video was still playing in the background.

Thanks,

Jodi

You are working with two timelines; the one for the slide, and the one for the video, and they are both completely independent.

Clicking pause pauses the slide timeline, but not the video. Clicking the video pauses the video, and when the slide timeline ends, the end of slide triggers take you to the next slide.

The only guaranteed, sure-fire, always reliable method I have found is this:

When it is time for a video, start a new slide. Start the video when the slide timeline starts. End the slide when the video ends. (I use "when media completes" in my triggers, rather than "when timeline ends").

Cover the entire video with a shape that MUST have a fill, and set the transparency of the shape to 98 or 99%. The shape prevents the learner from clicking on the video and stopping it.

That ties the video to the slide timeline. If you want to pause the slide for interactions, or whatever, the video pauses, too.
