issues with text to speech on replay (Storyline 360)

Apr 13, 2020

Hi there.   I am having an issue with the text to speech function not replaying when the replay button is activated from the player, it just keeps on doing its thing.  All other aspects of the timeline replay, but not the text to speech.  Any ideas?

Hi ACT Education,

When you click on the Replay button, what happens is that it resets the slide to the beginning of the timeline, but pauses the audio as that doesn't get reset in the same way that a normal media file, such as a video, would.

To get round this problem, all you need to do is to add another trigger to stop the audio prior to playing it. The action of stopping text-to-speech also resets it.

Just make sure that you get the trigger order correct and that this is the top trigger in your list for Icon 4.

I don't believe that there is any way to link triggers to seekbar controls and that is the reason why I attached the Stop Audio trigger to Icon 4, as this has to be pressed to hear the audio. If the user clicks the Replay button and then clicks the Play button on the seekbar, I don't think there is much you can do to get the audio playing.

Your other option is to stop the audio when the timeline starts for the slide. This will effectively reset it when the Replay button is clicked, however you still need to click on Icon 4 to play the audio, unless you also start the audio when the timeline starts, but that then defeats the object of your current setup where I assume you are putting everything on pause until the user is ready to start by clicking on Icon 4.

Personally, unless there is a reason why you specifically want it available, I would disable the seekbar.

If you are looking for a way to restart everything from scratch if you revisit the slide, all you need to do is to select "Reset to Initial State" When Revisiting in the Slide Options:

This will ensure that the user sees/hears the entire content of the slide, including any text-to-speech, whenever they are jumped back to the slide without the need to refresh the browser.

Today, I had the same issue with the replay of text to speech in a training.  The 'rewind' button isn't operative - true.  But to replay the text to speech audio, I did the following:

1. Access 'Player'

2. Under 'Controls' ensure that the Seekbar box is checked and choose Allow drag after completion.  Also ensure the Play/Pause box is checked.

If a user drags the seekbar backwards to the desired location and then chooses play, it will replay the text to speech.

I actually found that for my situation, the adding of triggers did not help. Instead, I removed all triggers stopping and starting the audio at the start of the timeline, and right clicked on the slide layer (in the bottom right hand corner) and clicked Properties. There I chose "reset to initial state" for the field "when revisiting." I also selected "Yes" for the field "allow seeking". This resolved my issue for the audio not replaying with the visual when I selected different points on the timeline after it had played through once already, and when I revisited that layer, the entire timeline played over again.
