Issues With the Next Button When Hidden

Feb 17, 2016

I am currently working on a course that has the next button hidden until the user click through all 4 layers incorporated on the slide. I am having an issue where this functionality works sometimes, but then others the next button will not appear at all even if they have clicked all 4 layers so they get stuck. I have this issue when the course is published and when I preview it in Storyline. Again its very sporadic.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Hi, Britany -- Thanks so much for reaching out here! Are you seeing the same behavior when you test your published output in the intended environment, as well? As it states here, "If you view an Articulate Storyline course on your local hard drive (or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive), you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail."

You may also want to take a look at this information on Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in SL2 and let us know if the steps presented help, and if issues persist, please feel free to share your file as Walt recommended.  :)

Just wondering if you were able to resolve the issue? I also run into the same situation with the hidden next button not showing up after completing all layers. And it is a published version in LMS which cannot be edited. Can you suggest any workaround? Re-taking the course or clearing cache did not help. The end user is very frustrated:(

Happy to help, Lu! I wasn't able to find a case for the author and since this is an older thread, let's start fresh:

  • What version of Storyline are you using?
  • Are you using the built-in Next button, or a custom one?
  • If you have access to the file, would you be able to share your .story file here and let us know which slide(s) the Next button issue occurs in? If yes, I'd love to dig into the file and see if I can reproduce the issue in SCORM Cloud.

I'll be here!

Thank you for following up Katie! I'm using Storyline 2. The next button is a built in one with modification of the color.  The issue is in most cases people can see the next button after clicking all the required layers. Only two people informed me that they are stuck. I know they are running the module in IE 11 in Win7. Do you still need the source file to identify the cause? I have it but there's some confidential information there that takes some time to clean up.

Thanks, Lu – and nice job on finding a trend with those two users, this will help us nail down what’s going on here 🌟

There are two routes we can take to get to the root:

  • Route one: We can appreciate that and if you'd rather not edit the file, simply test the course in SCORM Cloud in the same environment as the two learners. If the button works properly there but not in your LMS, we recommend opening a ticket with your LMS provider. If the issue is reproducible there, we'd love to delve deeper.
  • Route two: We'd be happy to dive into testing the .story file right away! You can share it privately here, and our Support team can sign an NDA if need be!

Let me know what you think – I'll be standing by!
