Jump to slide X when user presses a key is not working!

Mar 21, 2017

Hi, I'm building a course full of quizzes, branching depends on the user's answer, which means correct feedback branches to a slide, and incorrect feedback branches to another one...   the problem is that the trigger "jump to slide when user presses a key" only works when the slide is "next slide", but when I name another slide for example "6.2" it does not work anymore, is there a way to make it work?

Hey there Fadi!

Hmm, based on how you're describing it and if I'm understanding correctly- that should work just by selecting a specific slide to jump to for that trigger. Would you be able to share your .story project file here so I can take a closer look at your current setup? You can add at as an attachment right to a comment in this thread. Thanks!

Hey Fadi-- Thanks for sharing your file here! I see what you're saying about the trigger not performing the 'jump to slide' action when the enter key is pressed on the layers on slide 1.1. I went ahead and set up a case with our Support Engineers to investigate this a bit deeper with you. Your case number is 01041548 and one of our Engineers will be reaching out to you shortly via email. I'll be keeping an eye on it too, and I'll make sure to relay important details back here in the thread for anyone who may also find them helpful. Thanks again!

I am curious if there has been any resolution to this problem.  I am experiencing something similar.  Although, the trigger I am trying to use is set to execute when the user clicks a button rather than the "enter" key.  My issue:  After the user submits his/her response for the free form drop and drag review, the feedback layers pop up, but when Continue is clicked the only trigger that works is "hide this layer," but only when it is ordered first in the trigger panel.  I have a second trigger to direct the learner back to a specific slide, but that action never happens -- even when I change the trigger order... I am attaching the scene where I am experiencing this problem.

Any help/advice you can provide would be great.

Thanks,

Alyssa Gomez

Hi Laurie, thanks for sharing your file and allowing me to take a look. This was a real puzzle, but I finally found the culprit!

It appears there's a problem in Storyline 360 HTML5 output where a scrolling panel in a drag and drop quiz question prevents you from jumping to the next slide. You can get around this by viewing the Flash output or by removing the scrolling panel from the slide.

I really appreciate you bringing this to our attention! I'm going to write up a report so my team can verify whether this is a software bug. I'll keep you posted on any updates I receive.

Thanks again, and I'm sorry if this is slowing you down!

Great news for you, Laurie! We just released another update for Articulate 360, and it includes a fix for the problem where drag-and-drop questions with scrolling panels prevented learners from moving on in HTML5 output.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.

Please let me know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.

if anyone is still around for this thread, i have been having the same or a similar issue. i'm using SL 360. i believe my (corporate) copy of Articulate Storyline has been updated more recently than the "3 months ago" that i see this thread was being discussed. in any case, i could really use some help here. i have attached the slide in question. i also explain it below.

fyi, i also posted my question on the following thread: "Set TextEntry to the typed value when user presses the enter key"

again, any help would be appreciated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i would like the learner to enter a character string into a text entry field (with no room for additional lines) and then either click the search icon or hit Enter. however, the Enter key portion just isn't working.  it jumps to the next slide (as it should) when the hotspot is clicked, but not when the Enter key is being used.

I have attached the slide. i may (probably) have overdone it with a couple of my triggers, so i apologize for that. but if someone could possibly take a look at this and give me any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks very much.

Wendy,

Thank you VERY much. That almost did the trick. Actually, I should say that it did do the trick – however, I seem to have a different issue that is probably unrelated to this thread that I will need to figure out myself (tomorrow morning).

It seems that, after entering the character string, I have to hit Enter twice in order for it to 'take'. And in looking at my triggers, it appears that, because my text entry trigger (Set SearchTextEntry equal to the typed value when the control loses focus) is so low in the totem pole that I have to get down to it, so to speak, and then loop back up again before SL recognizes it. (And I don't see any way to move the Search Text Entry trigger higher in the flow of triggers.)

Anyway, if you have a minute to look at it and can come up with a quick answer, that obviously would be great. But I don't expect you to, as this seems to be a somewhat unrelated question/issue of mine.

But thank you very much either way. It would have taken me Lord knows how long to figure out the object of the trigger as you suggested. Thank you VERY much again for that.

I’m using SL360. It’s a corporate copy and when I get back in the office tomorrow (Wed) I’ll have to be sure it’s been fully updated. But I tried it yesterday at work and today at home and both times, I had to hit Enter twice (in Preview mode and from a published version).

I thought that the issue might have been the If condition. It was checking the variable EnterSearchCriteria. I won’t bother going into it, but I changed it to simply check that the text entry (variable SearchTextEntry) = “claim” (see image below) and it still makes me hit Enter twice.

However, it seems to me that the problem is that SL is not recognizing the character string until I hit enter or until I move the mouse off the text entry field (which I guess means it loses focus at that point). If you run the slide (I actually added a 2nd slide so it had somewhere to jump to) and look at my test display of the SearchTextEntry field (blue text), it doesn’t register “claim” until enter is hit or I move the mouse off the text entry field. (I can’t get a screen capture of it because as soon as I move my mouse off the text entry field, the text string registers.) At least for me. How you get it to go on the 1st enter is beyond me.

Any ideas would be welcome.

FYI, I am not able to attach my slightly updated story file because of rules here where I’m working. However, since I am (surprisingly) able to upload it to the articulate site, I did that just now.

Thanks very much again. I really appreciate your help.

Alyssa,

Here's a link to a screen recording of my problem. Let me know if you have any issues accessing it.

Thanks again.

Here is a link (hopefully) to a video of what I'm encountering. If that doesn't work, I've also attached my story file.

What I am experiencing is this: When I type in the character string, I have to move my cursor out of the text entry box before the string is recognized. So clicking on the hotspot works fine. But when I type the string and then hit enter, it gets caught as an edit error - but when I hit enter a 2nd time (without touching the characters), it jumps to the next slide as it should.

Alyssa,

FYI, I am hoping tech support here at WPS will upgrade SL for me tomorrow. The tech guy says there’s actually a 3.15 version that just came out.

So if you can’t figure anything out, I wouldn’t spend any more time on it yet. Let me get our Articulate programs up to date and then see where we’re at.

If you do find something, obviously let me know. But in the meantime I’ll keep you posted.

Hi Stuart,

If you're using Peek, the video will automatically upload to Articulate Review, and the video URL should automatically copy to your clipboard.

You can also access the video URL by going to 360.articulate.com, click on Articulate Review, then select the video you recorded.

On the Share tab, you can copy the link to the video to send to me.

I see. I’ve been doing this incorrectly. Just fyi, they (WPS) is installing the latest version of SL for me later today. I’ll test my stuff out and see what happens and let you know.

Thanks again for your continued support.
