Keyboard navigation performance issues

Jan 08, 2019

Keyboard navigation works perfectly well when I preview and first publish an Articulate 360 course to SCORM. So I am confused with a random issue I am experiencing where uploaded Articulate SCORM packages will not permit keyboard navigation on some subsequent attempts. The performance issues seem to be random but never occur on the users first attempt. Strangely, the courses remain completely navigable with a mouse at all times.

I have tried the following with the same results:

  • Uploading SCORM into both an LMS and a free SCORM cloud environment
  • Uploading and testing SCORM using different browsers (both Edge and Internet Explorer)
  • Experimenting with the Articulate player settings prior to publishing and then with the LMS/SCORM cloud environment settings when uploading

Am I missing something? Is there a simple setting that allows for consistent keyboard navigation results?

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Hi there, Jessica.  It sounds like you've done everything right, including your fair share of troubleshooting.  Thanks for sharing what you've tried so far.

I apologize -- We discovered an issue with keyboard navigation after a course is resumed in the LMS. We haven't yet identified any workarounds to this problem.

I'm adding your discussion to our report so we can provide you with any updates, right here.

Hi Crystal,

I really appreciate you sharing that this issue occurs when resuming a course in the LMS. This is consistent with what I have found in testing.

When resuming a course in the LMS we are presented with a screen that prompts us to either retry or resume. No matter what our selection, sometimes the Enter key doesn't respond and the only way to open the link is by using the spacebar. When the course opens via spacebar the only keyboard functions that work from that point on are up and down arrow keys. The mouse continues to work perfectly in all instances.

Based on this finding we have deduced that there must be something in the SCORM package that is preventing us from being able to use the Enter key.

Resolution of this issue is critical to us as our organization caters to learners who require keyboard navigation. Please can you let us know if this helps with the workarounds you are testing.

UPDATE: After reading the post here - https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/black-patch-appears-in-modern-player I updated my version of Articulate.

With the latest version of Articulate I can successfully launch SCORM in my LMS using the Enter key now - this is helpful - but keyboard navigation is still not working within the course once it loads.

Hi Jessica,

Great news!  We just released another update for Articulate 360 and included a few important fixes that you'll see in the release notes here.

The item you'll be interested in is:

When using the modern player, the keyboard navigation didn't always work after resuming the course.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.
