labeling pages

I am diving into variable and noticed on someone else's template they made labels for their pages like pg01next - this is not the exact name of the page so I am not sure where this is coming from. Then they applied variables to them number=o, to activate them they change the variable to 1.
I am missing how to name these pages to give them variables. My pages all seem to be named a long name from power point import.
Do I have to go and make a variable like this for every page, is this common?

Yes, they likely made a variable for each of those - as Storyline doesn't include a method to allow for page numbering. You can look at what variables are available by clicking on the [X] button within the triggers panel as that is where all of them are listed, andyou can read more about variables here.
