Launching a Captivate 6 file as a Demo

Oct 22, 2013

I'm trying to add a demo to a lesson. the demo was made in Captivate 6. I published my Captivate as SWF/HTML5. Unfortunately, it will not play in the published SL file. Any suggestion regarding how to make this work.

I didn't have to manually move the CP support files in SL's external folder. When I added the CP into SL (slide 1.8) I selected the CP zip file and, once published, I checke the external files folder and all of the necessary support files were there. In all honesty I can't say that previous uploads to CP were done accurately as I didn't check the external files before. However, this is the first time that I was asked to choose how to open a file.

Bewildering!

I've uploaded the latest versions of my published CP and SL files, I'm just confused as to what's happening. Please if you could, send me your SCORM test file. There has to be something that I'm missing. I'm stepping away from this tonight. Will revisit tomorrow morning. Thanks for all of the help so far.

Hi Kim, it looks like you ONLY zipped up the Captivate-related files (no SL-related files) and yes, if you try to launch this, it would ask you to download/open. Here is the SCORM-compliant file that I used to test on SCORM cloud.

Not sure why all the uploads didn't send yesterday, but I'll remedy that this morning. However, I opened your zip file and notice that my our output matches. However, I did get an internal email today indicating that the SumTotal Player causes problems in our environment. Do you think it could be causing the problem that I'm having launching the published course in IE or getting my Captivate demo to launch?

I just don't see what issues the player could cause. To my knowledge the SumTotal Player allows users to:

  1. Launch and view an online course.
  2. Take notes and add text highlights using built-in study aids.
  3. Check your progress and results.
  4. Use collaborative features to communicate with other students.
  5. Share your study aids with other people taking the course, and view the study aids which are shared by other participants.

Per my directive, the 5 files highlighted on the left portion of the image must be removed.

Kim, as I had mentioned, I have no experience with SumTotal. The files you highlighted are the ones that are responsible for the SCORM launching and communication between LMS and a SCORM-compliant course. Maybe (that's a wild guess) the SumTotal player provides that functionality.

Michael you have been an angel providing so much relevant, timely, and super amazing support. While doing my own online research I've fount a great many postings that identify compatiblity issues between IE(8) and SL. Unfortunately, other browsers are not supported within my company's work environment. I'm beyond confused as to why the SL software was chosen for our internal use as our student base will have no way of launch / enteract with course content.

I really don't know what to do next. I assume it's probably appropriate to open a Articulate Support Case. Regardless, I just want to extend my effusive thanks for ALL of your help and insight.

Hi Kim, no problem at all. Since you seem to have exhausted all other options, I'd suggest too that you open a support case.

After all the digging, it's been determined that my compatiblity issues with IE8 are being caused by the security settings for IE. Michael I thank you for your assistance and Leslie thank you for sticking around. We have a work around in place--local reviews will be done using the Firefox Browser and, once loaded in our LMS, we will then have the ability to view usine IE8--that will help us keep moving forward with SL.

As far as the Sum Total Player issue is concerned, I'll be seeking advice from our larger training team. Since this is an internal requirement, I feel that they should be the ones providing the resolution.

I'm hearitly glad a resolution could be found as I'm really loving the simplicity, functionality, and versatitliy of the tool.

Hi Kim, good to hear that you have found a workaround!

Once the browser issue to identified and a work-around provided, I returned to the original issue of not being able to adequately launch a insert a Captivate 6 file into my course that would:

1. open & play within a designated browser

2. be full functional which includes roll overs and jumping slides based on how buttons were designed

3. launch on command and not automatically

4. play in new window

In order to get all of those elements, I opted to use Web Objects. After some digging I located a screencast in another forum posting (see link below) which walked me through creating and embedding html code for the Web Object. Once created, I inserted the W.O. into my course on a hidden layer that would trigger when the DEMO button was clicked.

Thanks again Michael for putting me on the right track.

Hi Kim, great to hear that you worked out the issues. I guess a webobject is your new best friend
