I have built a slide with two layers. When the user presses a button (Layer 1), a movie plays (Layer2). When the movie finishes, the trigger is set to return to Layer 1. Is there any way to make this transition a fade?
There is no built in way to fade a layer but you can kind of fake it by adding a partially transparent symbol or two just after the video finishes and adding a fade in and fade out animation to the symbol.
I have attached a very crude sample story file to show you how it can be done. In this example, I created two symbols - one that just covers the video followed by another that is the size of the slide layer.
IN SL2 you can go to your layer (Layer 1 in your case) and then in the top menu select Transitions, and from there click on Fade. Everytime you access the layer 1, the transition applied will be a Fade.

Or do this with two slides that look the same. That way you gain the slide transition effects.
