Layer sometimes not showing base layer

Feb 28, 2018

hi, I am pretty new at Storyline, and rally hope that somebody can help me with this one!

I have a slide with a layer which is set at Hide other slide layers, but not to Hide objects on base layer. It is triggered by a number of variables being not true. It is set to last for 4 seconds and then automatically hide. The problem is that sometimes it works well, just appearing on top of the base layer and then disappearing after 4 seconds. At other times when it is triggered, it hides the base layer altogether, and when the timeline finishes, I just get a white screen - no base layer or anything. The only way to get the base layer back is to refresh.

Any help would be very very much appreciated!

Hi Anne!  I had a look at your file - thanks for attaching it.

I wasn't able to reproduce the blank appearance after reaching the Not Finished layer.  I did make some slight changes to your trigger setup, though, based on what I saw.  With your setup:

  • If a user changes her mind after initially answering, the triggers didn't toggle the variable back to the opposite value.
  • Also, it was possible to answer both Yes and No to questions.

Check out this tutorial for working with checkboxes.  You'll see that you can use a Button Set to group your checkboxes together.  The beauty of button sets is that it automatically prohibits the user from selecting more than one choice in the set.  So, I made button sets for the Yes/No pair in each question.  That way, if a user changes their mind, it will automatically uncheck the original answer!

Buttons sets don't, however, change the variable value.  So, I switched your trigger setup.  I triggered the variable to be adjusted when the user clicks the Submit button with a condition that the Yes variables are true.  That way, a user can toggle the choices all they want, but the variable isn't changed until they have made their final decision.  The variables default to false, so they really only need to change if a Yes box is selected, or, true.

Have a look at the attached modified file, and let me know how it works for you!

Many thanks for this Crystal, yours is a definitely improvement, and it's really helpful to use the button set! I am still getting the blank screen sometimes, though. There doesn't seem to be any consistency to it, because I can repeat exactly the same actions (that is, tick or change the same boxes), and sometimes I will get the blank screen and other times I won't. I presume that if it's not consistent, it's not something that I can fix in the setup?

hi Alyssa, I have attached a video I made which shows the problem. In this video, I work through the slide four times, and sometimes the blank screen shows, and sometimes it doesn't! I refresh the browser screen in between each try. You can see that the first time and the fourth time, I do exactly the same actions ... one produces the blank screen and the other doesn't.

This video is made from Storyline in preview, but the same thing happens in published. It happens often enough that it is a problem - it's not just a very rare occurrance.

Again, am very grateful for your help!

Hi Anne,

Thanks for sharing that video. You mentioned it's preview and publish - do you test the published output by uploading to your web server/LMS?

We had a similar report of flashing/blinking between slides but that was only when viewed in IE11 and it has been fixed in the latest updates of Storyline 3/360. Do you know what update you're using? The easiest way to check is open Storyline and go to the Help tab -> About Articulate Storyline. You'll see the update number listed there.

One other piece that is known to cause odd/random behavior in Storyline files is where the file is being saved/edited/published to. You'll want to work on local project files as working from a network/shared drive is known to cause some really unusual behavior.

Let me know if you can check into those things, and we'll keep going from there!

Hey Anne,

Thanks for sharing a video demonstrating the issue you are having. I took a look at the file that Crystal shared with you above and I cannot re-create the issue...and I've refreshed a lot :)

Curious if the issue happens in any course you are working on or just this particular one?

If you cannot re-create the issue in a new course, I would advise to import the file into a new one and proceed.

If it's happening in any/all files, you should certainly conduct a repair of your software.

hi Leslie, the issue happens in any course - I have had it happen with another Storyline that I have produced. It is always fixed by refreshing, but often happens again.

hi Ashley, I think that I have the updated software - V3.12.14647.0.  I have also updated all of my browsers, but still get the problem. It doesn't seem to matter which browser I'm in. However, I am saving to Dropbox (installed on my computer) - could this be causing the problem?
