Layer (?) You did not fill in the question

Jan 21, 2013

When I forget to anser a Multiple Response for example I get a Layer with the text You did not fill in the question. I cannot find where this layer is defined. I look in the feedback master.

I find the place where I can edit the text but not the place where I can edit the look and feel.

Hi Peter,

For a "Multiple Response" question, I believe the default response is "You must complete the question before submitting". Is that what you're seeing?

You should be able to change this in the player's text labels. To do so, click on "Player", this will open up Player Properties. Then, under Custom, click on "Text labels". I believe the entry you're looking for is number 17 by default, "Invalid Answer Text". On the right side, just enter the text you'd like to display to the user when they try to submit a question without selecting a response.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Good morning Peter and Rebecca,

I found a post by Jeanette that may explain this a little better for you both:

Hi Gerard,

You can definitely alter the wording of the message by changing your player's text labels, and you can also change the colors of the pop-up by customizing your player colors. However, other aspects of the message's visual design aren't currently editable, since the message is handled by Storyline internally rather than being controlled by feedback masters.

If you want a totally different look for your "invalid answer" message, you could create your own on a slide layer, and trigger that to appear instead of the default pop-up. Here's a look at how you could do that:

Christine, thanks for digging this up. Appreciate it! I now have some follow-up questions for you and/or Jeanette.

Button not duplicated?

When I duplicated the incorrect layer, the "click to edit master Text styles" button came along in the duplicate. It didn't seem to when Jeanette did this, at least when she shows the duplicated layer at around 1:15 in the video. No biggie, it can easily be hidden, just wondering if that's what she did (hid it). The timeline wasn't showing at that point in the video.

Repeat steps for every question?

Is it necessary to repeat these steps for every quiz question? That is, once the layout has been created in the Feedback master, the steps for every question slide would be to:

  • create a new layer
  • select the invalid layout
  • type the desired text in the boxes
  • set up the triggers

Or, is there a way to copy that layer to other quiz question slides? I'm not seeing it if there is.

Also, I'm wondering WHY the invalid answer question style doesn't by default take on the style of the incorrect and correct answer rectangles. It would make things a whole lot easier! I know you may not know the answer, but am wondering who does

I'd be happy to submit feature requests for any of this but want to wait until y'all reply. Don't want to waste anyone's time if I'm missing something - and it wouldn't be the first time!

Hi Becky! Yes, when you duplicate the Incorrect Feedback layout in your feedback masters, the button placeholder comes along. I didn't want that, since it's really meant for feedback layers in which Storyline creates the button automatically. In the example shown in the screencast, I believe I either turned off the placeholder's visibility in the timeline or just moved the placeholder offscreen. Then on the actual slide where I applied the layout, I added my own button.

And yes, unfortunately right now there isn't a way to batch-apply the custom Invalid Answer layer on all questions, so it's a bit of work if your quiz has a lot of questions.

And totally, I agree it would be much easier if the auto-generated Invalid Answer message were controlled by the feedback masters. A feature request for this would be great!
