License needed to share character elements across a team?

May 31, 2013

I am helping a team produce an e-learning module for internal business use. We all work on separate PCs in separate locales, but work for the same large company. One team member has Articulate Storyline on his PC, and I would like to use the cutout characters (photos of people on white backgrounds) as elements in the e-learning project we are working on together. However, I do not have Articulate Storyline; I am using Techsmith's Camtasia to produce and render the final product.

My question is this--Am I covered under the other team member's license to use Storyline elements as part of our team's production, since we work within the same company? In other words, can the team member with Storyline imagery export the images of the characters and provide them to me for use within Camtasia, assuming "up to 3 team members" are covered under the Articulate license? I know things can get tricky when you talk about sharing elements and licenses so I wanted to know what our options are. Thanks so much!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Kristen!

If you don't actually need to run Storyline for the content, you shouldn't need to worry about the licence. I don't think it will be an issue if you simply use an image your colleague created in the program.

If he wants to share an image with you, he can right-click on the image (or collection of images) and choose "Save as Picture". He'll be able to save and share the image file with you.

Now, if you intend to use the software, you will need your own license, unless some other arrangement has already been made with the company.

It may be best to go ahead and contact our sales team with these questions, just to confirm. You can contact them using the information or the form on the following page:

Thank you for your quick reply, Christine. We will not be using Storyline to run the content. It will be embedded as an MP4 playing back in an HTML video container, on our company's server. However, since the character cutouts are part of the software bundle for Storyline, I wanted to ensure that a) I wouldn't be violating the Storyline terms of use if I was using those character cutouts from someone else's license, and b) that I can use them in another program like Camtasia.

Per your recommendation, I will follow up with the sales team with my question--thank you for your feedback!
