I wondered if anyone could advise whether it is possible to change the transition that occurs when you click a button for a light box to appear. Specifically, I am talking about the way the light box just pops up in a box in the middle of the screen. Is it possible to change how this occurs, perhaps the light box coming down from the top or sliding in from the right etc?
Unfortunately you cannot change the way a lightbox "pops up" in the middle of the screen, but you can always create your own pseudo lightbox effect using slide layers! I'm sure folks in the community could point you to some examples of this.

In addition to what Alyssa shared I wanted to s how you an example of how this was done previously to create a custom lightbox. You'll see that it's for Storyline 1, but the same ideas and principles would apply for Storyline 2 in terms of using layers and triggers.
