Limit number of re-tries on exam

May 10, 2013

Hi there - I have a several exams that I need to build.  The client want the student to be able to take each exam a total of 3 times.  Is there a way that I can set that?  I've moved the Retry button to the failure layer, but from there I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there Ca. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Are you wanting to give the learner 3 attempts at each question in your course, or the entire quiz?

If you're wanting to control the amount of time learners are able to attempt the entire quiz, you may want to take a look at the following tutorial:

Limiting Quiz Attempts

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks and welcome again!

Cameron,

Here's what I'd do...

1. Add a number variable, set the initial value  to 0.

Now, on the results slide....

2. Add a trigger to your retry button to add a value of 1 to the number variable each time it's clicked.

3. Add a slide level trigger that says, change the state of the retry button to hidden when the timeline starts if the number variable is = 2.

So you want your user to have 2 retries (for a total of 3 attempts).

Number variable starts at 0. They take the quiz for the first time.

They fail the first time through and hit retry (number variable is now = 1).  They are on their first retry.

They fail the second time through an hit retry (number variable is now = 2). They are on their 2nd retry.

Now, when they return to the results slide, the retry button will not be there because of the slide level trigger that hides it when the number variable is = 2.

Hope this helps!

What happens if the student fails it three times and the button disappears? This has always been an issue for me where someone is required to pass a quiz to continue (or certify completion). If someone doesn't pass after x tries are you then sort of obligated to follow up with that person in some way to make sure they get the attention they need?

Hi, thanks.  I’m using the system as outlined in the video.  Somebody needs a bit of oxygen though, if they think they can keep saying it’s a really easy way.  I tried it on a couple of students – had them watch the video, and then asked “OK, what do you do first?”  100% failure rate (including me or course).  So, I took some time and compiled a set of ‘notes’ to accompany the video.  This way you can watch it once or twice, and go from there.  Feel free to use it, or add it to the link somehow.

Now to my next BIG problem.  My client is using Cogentys to host.  They want the student to have 3 attempts – SOLVED!  But they ALSO want the questions in randomized order, and on some they want to use a random 10 of the 15 questions they have built.  The situation is tailor made for your Question banks.  Except for that “known problem” where the Retry button is inoperative in HTML5 if questions are  drawn from a bank.  I’ve built a test exam, and yes, it does diable the Retry button.  Drat.

So….  As a workaround, is there a way to randomize questions other than put them in a bank?  In your (obviously vast, and I’m NOT being sarcastic) experience, could Cogentys handle the 3 tries if I built 3 separate exams?  I don’t want to let this client down as they have invested a lot of time and trouble (including ME) in Storyline and Cogentys and HTML5.  Again, FLASH is not an option.

I’m looking for best workaround, one that will limit extra work and billing – involving me, Cogentys, or a combination.

I’m also CC’ing my client contact on this, so he can see what I’m trying to do.

Again, any and all help will be totally appreciated.  You people really do rock.  (Except for the “really easy”.  It was said in such a nice way, though, that you can’t get mad at her…)

Thanks again,

Camster.
