Limiting Quiz Attempts

Dec 12, 2013

Hi there. Just watched the tutorial on limiting quiz attempts in Storyline. All very straightforward however it appears that these attempts are limited to the session the learner is in. For instance, if a learner is limited to 3 attempts to pass at one time, it works. My issue however is that I write continuing medical education for a variety of healthcare professionals. One of the CE credit-granting bodies allows only 3 attempts to pass a post test before a learner is permanently locked out of that offering. Our learners often are unable to complete the attempts at one time. We need to be able to let them have 3 attempts total for that quiz but not limit the three attempts to a single session. Our LMS will track each failed attempt if the data is sent to it and I can set the attempts as 3 on the LMS. Will that work with storyline.

Hi Kate,

You can set the individual question attempts within the question editor, but if you'd like to set the total number of attempts, you'll want to follow the method described here  that matches this blog post which involves tracking of variables. There is also a easy to follow example in this thread.

Since your users may need to leave the course before going through another attempt, you'll want to look at enabling the Resume behavior.  How your LMS handles tracking the attempts and scoring for each will be dependent on the LMS - and you may want to check with them as well.

Ashley, thank you but I believe that only works if they do they do the "retry" during that session. If they exit the quiz, and then leaving the LMS completely. Perhaps they come back in two days, will Storyline have sent information to the LMS so it can register the first try so it can "remember" that the user already had a try?

Hi Kate,

Storyline will communicate to your LMS following these guidelines. It's up to your LMS if they'll recognize that as a failed attempt and lock out the user after 3 total attempts. The method shared would track the number of times they've viewed the quiz within Storyline and stop them from taking it a 4th time based on the variables. In regards to the Resume behavior, the reason I'd leave it enabled is to have the variables stay current (and your LMS may keep it's own resume data) otherwise, a user could say reach the slide prior to the results and say "I didn't do too well, I'm just going to close and start over" and get a new start. If Resume is enabled for Always, they'll be brought back to where they left off, variables and all.

You may also want to check with your LMS regarding if the course will be considered in review mode once meeting the completion requirement.  If that's the case, you could set up a final slide that would submit course completion to your LMS.

Hi Ashley. We set up the triggers and variable as described. Nice instructions. Very easy. Regardless of the settings we use, whether on restart always resume, never resume, with and without the check box for ignoring the flash cookie (though our LMS does support bookmarking) and published in pass/fail mode, the data is not being passed back to the LMS. What is value Storyline sends to the LMS for cmi.exit= ?
