Limiting quiz attempts in Storyline
Jun 14, 2013
Today's blog entry was very timely for me; I am trying to find a new way to limit quiz attempts to ONE attempt, actually.
This seems simple - remove the Retry Quiz button.
The problem is that when it goes into the LMS, once the quiz finishes, the user can close the course, go to some other page in the LMS - then later go back to the course and start right back at the beginning.
We have "Allow Multiple Attempts" set up in our LMS because we would like multiple attempts on OTHER courses, but just a few we want to only give once.
The only way I can think to do this is to force them to a slide post-quiz results and force them to resume where they left off (and have no navigation off that last slide) but so far it hasn't been working. If the score gets sent back to the LMS, then the user starts back at the beginning.
Has anyone had any success with creating "one and done" courses? I know it's an intricate dance between software and LMS (in our case Oracle Taleo Learn.)
Thanks!

Hi Andrea,
For the resume option (keeping the user from retrying) that you're using, are you selecting the "Prompt to resume" or "Always resume" option? If you choose "Always resume" it shouldn't give the user a choice - they should see what they already submitted and if the retry option is disabled, they shouldn't be able to try it again.
Also, what option are you using for the resume feature? Are you using Flash, or the LMS to handle this?
If you've tried all of that already, it might help to contact the LMS and see if there's some way to use different options through their system for different courses. I haven't worked with them personally, but I'd think that assigning only one option for resuming forall content is a little limiting.
Just a couple thoughts! I hope you're able to get this working :)
Thanks!
Hi I am having a similar issue, where do I manage Always Resume option? If they have attempted our quiz 3 times, I would like it to go back to the beginning of the quiz the next time they access it and they complete the full quiz again. Is this possible?
Hi Dianne!
You can access the Always Resume setting in Player Properties.
If the course is set to Always Resume, it will restart on the last slide the learner visited. If they left the course on the Result Slide, they will resume the course on the same slide.
After the learner has attempted the quiz 3 times, it sounds like you want to give them another attempt. Is that right?
Hi Alyssa
We wanted to allow them to try 3 times, and if they don't successfully complete it, we have a note that displays advising to review the training material and then try again.
I have put a trigger on the storyline assessment so that they can only attempt it 3 times. And then when the have had the three attempts in the LMS, I want them to be able to go back in and do it again once they have reviewed the training material.
I did find the resume function I the player setting and have changed the setting to never resume. Is that the correct way to do it?
Hi, Dianne!
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for that context!
In that case, try using a "Restart Course when the learner clicks a button" trigger. This trigger will completely reset the course and bring the learner back to the first slide.
Let me know if that would work for you!
Hi Alyssa,
My Superintendent would now like them to be locked out after 3 unsuccessful attempts and they have to come and see the Training Department and we them unlock the course for them to have 3 more attempts.
Is this possible? currently they can just go back to their development plan and launch the course and restart the course after 3 unsuccessful attempts.
I think he also wants to be able to see how many attempts they have had and what they are getting incorrect.
Any suggestions?
Hi Dianne!
In that case, I would suggest looking into your learning management system (LMS) settings. Most LMSs have a "lock out" feature that will prevent the learner from accessing the course after a certain number of attempts.
You should also have access to data reports within your LMS like the number of attempts used and how the questions were answered.
What LMS are you using? Hopefully other folks using the same LMS can chime in with their tips!
Hi Alyssa,
Where do I find what version of LMS we are using? At the bottom of the screen it has (C) 2012 INX Software Pty Ltd. Our company has only recently purchased LMS if that helps.
I have been going through the LMS trying to find where to lock them out after 3 attempts but I can't see it.
Hi Dianne,
Perhaps the URL you use to access the LMS has the name within it? Each LMS can be quite different in terms of how they're set up and the available features, so ultimately I'd suggest connecting with your LMS support team/admin for more help!
Hi Ashley,
No worries I will contact the Support Team. -lms.inxsoftware.com/
thank you both for your help.
