Line and Character Spacing issue in Articulate Storyline 2

Jun 22, 2017

Hello all,

I have a few courses developed in Articulate Storyline 2 that look fine on one computer, but when viewed on another computer, the line and character spacing is different. Sometimes characters are hanging out of shapes or even hanging off the entire slide. This is problematic when trying to QA because members of our team are presented with three separate layouts. I thought it might be due to the resolutions of monitors, but even after publishing the course have misplaced text. Has anyone else ran into issues like this?

Hey Sam,

That does sound really strange! I'm sorry that it's been slowing down your workflow-- let's get to the bottom of it.

I have a few questions to start with:

  • Have you verified that all the computers working on the .story project files are set to 96 DPI (Dots Per Inch)? Take a look at this article for how to check in each Windows version.
  • Are you working locally on the files (from your C:Drive or Desktop) or are you working from a shared/network drive?
  • Are you following these guidelines for collaborative work environments?

Keep me posted!

Thanks for letting me know that, Sam. Keep me in the loop after you verify those. Working directly from a network drive can definitely cause some strange behavior like what you're seeing.

Similarly, make sure to double check those DPI settings. If the computer isn't set to 96 DPI, you'll see odd behavior such as:

    • Elements of the application are misplaced or distorted.
    • Objects are misplaced or distorted when previewed or published.
    • Zoomed images don't work as expected.
    • Font sizes are incorrect after using the translation features.

Let me know!

Hey Ali,

Do you think the issue could be caused by developing the modules across Storyline versions? We noticed that one of the users that was viewing the content (that got the distorted layout) was using the current version while I, using the previous version, could not replicate the error. So if a course was developed on one version and view in Storyline on another version, could that be causing the layout issue?

After days (5 days according to your last comment) of trouble shooting, this inconsistency is over my head and this is the last discovery that the team can think of.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Sam!

Do you mean that you're running on different updates in Storyline 2? We do always recommend that everyone be running the latest update, as there have been a number of bug fixes included in each.

I'd imagine that could definitely impact things if someone is encountering a bug in an older build that had been fixed in a newer update. For consistency, I'd make sure you're all running the latest update for Storyline 2 which you can download over here.

And again, triple checking to make sure everyone you're collaborating with is following this workflow is always a great idea along with verifying the DPI settings as I mentioned above.
