Link to pdf file not working despite many attempts - is it because I'm using a Mac?
Aug 17, 2016
Hi-
I have a project that uses three images (as thumbs) to link to downloadable pdf files. I created a trigger to jump to a file/url for each image, linking to the correct pdf file on my desktop. When I test the link using the check button within the trigger window, Storyline browses to the folder with the correct pdf. However, when I publish the project and upload to scormcloud, the files don't come with the project!
I saw a post that said Storyline should grab the files during the publishing process and place them in a folder within the project output called "external files," but when I check, my project does not have that folder.
I should note that I have done this before with success, but that was before I switched to a Macbook with Parallels setup. Could this be an issue with Mac/Windows not talking since I share the desktop between the two? Any workarounds? Can I copy the files into the output folder after the fact?
Thanks!

Hi Matthew-
The issue is that when I set up Parallels, I decided to share the desktop so files on one show on the other. They are essentially one in the same, and the triggers are pointing correctly. It just seems that the publishing process isn't picking up the files.
Thanks,
Logan
Hi Logan,
I also use VMWare (we've got some folks on Parallels) but Matthew is right in terms of not using the shared desktop. You may want to take a look at the steps here for working with Parallels and Storyline.
Update: I was able to correct the issue. My fix: in the "jump to file/url" trigger, I simply entered the name of the pdf file (not the path). Then, I published the project, added the pdf files to the output folder and re-zipped. This worked!
It seems I manually did what SL is supposed to do, but I'm happy, so all is well.
Thanks for the replies, all!
Glad you got it figured out Logan - and Storyline does need to know the file path as to where to find it on your computer - although I wish it did it via magic. :)
Thanks, Ashley. I understand that SL needs to know the path, I meant that I was manually grabbing the file and placing it into the published folder which SL does if the path is correct, right? My case was a bit odd given my operating system setup.
Ah, thanks Logan. Storyline should pull the file into your published output folder, but if you just place the file in there that doesn't create a visible link within the course. I have seen people use this method to link to already existing files in the course.
