Links: Setting a Trigger when they click link

Sep 10, 2013

Hi all! First post on here, relatively "green" with Storyline.

My question is on triggers. I want to make it where my learners have to click on two links (they open web hosted PDFs) before they can move forward in the course.

I set up a set of slide triggers and then a set of player triggers.

Slide = false when: timeline starts

Slide = true when: timeline ends, and first link is equal to visited and second link is equal to visited

Player - user can jump to next slide when slide = true, gets an error message (must complete all elements) when slide = false.

Again, I am pretty green - so take it easy on me   Any guidance appreciated.

Thank you

Becky

There are always lots of different ways in Storyline to achieve the same goal. Here is one option that ( I think) may be a bit simpler. I simply check whether or not both links are in visited state. If yes, then the Next button takes you to the next slide. If not then a incomplete message is displayed. Unless there is audio on the slide that you want the leaner to listen to, I don't see the need for the extra condition of timeline ends. Hope that helps.

I agree with Michael's approach, and would point out that the "Jump to next slide" trigger uses the 'and' conditional statement; it  wants to see PDF1 AND PDF2 in Visited state, whereas the "Show layer 'incomplete'" trigger uses the 'or' condition; if either PDF1 OR PDF2 is not Visited, you'll show the layer.

One more stylistic point; To reduce the number of clicks for the learner, when I do the don't move ahead' setup, I give the caption on the 'incomplete' layer In and Out animations, and set the incomplete layer to hide when its timeline ends, after, say, 5 seconds.

Hope this helps!
