LMS Good-bye message

Feb 13, 2018

Since the recent updates to Storyline came out, we are getting the LMS Good-bye message displaying for our modules, whereas it never displayed before.

Has something changed in the recent updates causing this issue?

The problem is that it is not just appearing when you have completed the module, it also comes up when exiting the module when it is incomplete. This is causing confusion for our learners as they get a message saying the content is complete, but they haven't actually completed it.

How can we fix this? I know I can manually deleted the message in the language file, but that is not ideal as I have tried that and it seems I then have to do it manually in each and every project, which is time consuming.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Please report this as a bug.  It certainly should come up if the course isn't complete, but it has always appeared for me on course completion in my LMS.

You can customize this message (or make it blank) in the source files, so that it is consistent with each course you publish.

Remember though, you will  have to update the goodbye.htmt file each time an upgrade is available as the file will revert back to the original.  Minor, as it can be just a copy/paste thing you save else where can bring in each time.

Here is how you can customize the goodbye message (old post, but it hasn't changed since I first created it).

Hi John,

This is the first report I've seen of a change in the messaging following an update, so we'd be happy to take a look! If you can share a copy of your .story file so that we can test with your same settings, and any information about how to consistently recreate the issue that's key for our quick troubleshooting.

You're welcome to share here in the E-Learning Heroes community, or if you'd prefer to share privately you can send along to our team here.

Let me know if you upload to our Support Engineers and I'll be happy to follow along.

Hi Chris,

What update are you using? Storyline 3 is now on Update 3 and Storyline 360 is now on Update 13.

It's also unusual that you're only seeing it in one browser and not the other. What LMS are you using as well? Have you looked to confirm that something didn't change on that end either to force a "goodbye" message?

Chris Smit

Hi Ashley,

We just updated to Update 3 and we experience this ever since.

This morning I checked again. If I try a course we created with the previous update (not really sure which one it was) I do not get the "LMS Good-bye message". When upload the course from an Update 3 publish, I do get the message.

I also double checked to see if the difference between the browsers is still true. In IE 11 I do get the message, In Chrome (64.0.3282....) I don't get the message.

The behaviour looks a bit like what is written here:

https://articulate.com/support/article/exit-course-trigger-doesnt-work-sl2

"When you use the Exit course trigger, you may find that it doesn't function as expected in your published course. There are several possible reasons:"

If that is the case, do we really need to adjust the 'var EXIT_BEHAVIOR' in the Configuration.js in the program files??? It would seem much more logical to have a setting for this on the front end.

Are you working on such a setting?

Kind regards,

Chris Smit

Hi Chris,

Sorry I missed your post last week - but yes, that same article applies to Storyline 3 and Storyline 360 and using the exit course trigger,  but that article does not mention the Goodbye.html message, but it is mentioned here in this article for Storyline 2.  It's odd that you'd just start seeing this in Storyline 3 Update 3, so I'll check with my team on that.

Larry, I've not yet heard of it popping up in the middle of a course. Can you share a bit more about what you're seeing? Are you also using Storyline 3? What LMS are you hosting your courses in?

Larry Burke

Using Articulate 360 and GreenLight LMS. Just within the last week. If the course is a "tree" with multiple modules, after a module it will pop-up. But after some it doesn't. And occasionally our tester has the pop-up in the middle of a module. Only solution is to close the LMS screen and open up the assigned training again and continue and the next module will start.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for popping back in and sharing an update.

So, it sounds like the courses are linked within your LMS and that is when you are encountering the issue and it's inconsistent across content and users?

That certainly makes it hard to track down.

Are you using the latest update of Storyline 360, which is update 13 (Build 3.13.15006.0)?

Curious if you encounter the same issue if the courses are not linked or perhaps in SCORM Cloud? How are you tracking the results?

Larry Burke

Hi Leslie

Yes, we are in Build 13.13.15006.0.

We are not encountering this if it is a single module They are linked. I've attached an example.

It's a course entitled CARE Team Initial Training and has four modules in it and then two surveys.

The courses have to be linked as they are assigned to certain departmental employees based on qualifications defined in out LMS. Tracking is based off completion in the LMS. But we haven't seen this when we are using a single module course.

Hopes this helps.

Thanks.

Larry

Hi John,

What version of Storyline are you using? Storyline 3 Update 3 only came out on March 6th and we haven't had another update yet.

Storyline 360 Update 14 came out earlier in April, but there wasn't anything specific to changing this set up. Have you also looked at testing it outside your LMS, perhaps in SCORM Cloud to see if the same updates are causing issues there?

Crystal Horn

Hi John and Larry!  I'm going to open cases for you with our support engineers so they can dive in a bit on your details.

I wasn't able to reproduce this behavior when hosting my SCORM 1.2 course in SCORM Cloud, so if we can get an example project from each of you and possibly login credentials to view the content from your LMS, it'll help the effort!
