LMS marking course completed before course technically ends

May 09, 2016

Hi!

We currently use CourseMill.  I have a course with a final assessment and results slide set to recognize 70% as a passing grade.  The good news is...it works. The not-so-good news is that the LMS is launching the certificate of completion the second 70% completion is reached.

I'd like the learner to complete the course before the LMS recognizes the 70% or higher grade.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Julie,

I'm not sure I'm clear on what your describing, so I wanted to try and reiterate and clarify -

Do you see the certificate and completion occur before the user reaches the results slide which is passing their final score? So once they've answered enough questions to score a 70% they're seeing the certificate element? If so, you'll want to reach out to your LMS team as the certificate is on their end and not built into Storyline.

If I'm misunderstanding or you have any additional information to share, please feel free to do so here. Hopefully others in the community can weigh in here as well if they  utilize that LMS.

Yes, the certificate launches before the results slide...well before it.  Once I correctly answered 70% of the questions, it triggered the LMS to send the Cert. of Completion.

I emailed them this morning and they asked, "Are you marking the course complete within the course itself?".

I thought the results slide showing the 70% marked the course complete.

Is there another way to mark the course complete when you are tracking via a results slide?

Hi Julie,

The results slide (if that is the tracking method you chose as a part of your publish settings) should be what marks your course complete, but each LMS may have different standards/requirements - so I'd defer to the LMS team for further specifics.  You could look at testing the course at SCORM Cloud as well which is an industry standard for testing LMS content and enable the debug mode to see what is passed to your LMS vs. what is passed to SCORM Cloud.

Solution: I created an additional survey slide that can only be accessed  from the "Success" layer.  I then changed the tracking from a minimum percentage earned to the number of screens visited. Being that they can only access the survey screen if they reach the success screen, the certificate doesn't launch until the minimum amount of screens have been visited.
