LMS Tracking

Nov 19, 2013

Hello,

I know this isn't really a Storyline issue, per say, but I'm sure other community members deal with LMS issues on a regular basis. Has anyone ever dealt with the issue of course progress not being tracked? In my case, certain users pass our final exams, exit the course, but no progress is tracked. Other users have no problems whatsoever. We've been keeping track of users having trouble and have yet to identify any underlying similarities as far as browsers and operating systems go.

Anyone else ever run into this? We have a support ticket open with our LMS, but I'd love to hear some other experiences (and possible causes/solutions). Thanks!

We've consistently had these types of problems, more commonly with Captivate built content, when learners are using Chrome, Firefox or IE10.

Definitely a problem on the LMS side for us (supported browser versions), with the exception of the captivate scorm content which just doesn't play well with certain browsers, especially Firefox.

I am running into a simular problem in Quizmaker 13. I have created a training course with 52 Presenter slides, 2 Quizmaker survey slides (for acknowledgement), and 14 Quizmaker question slides. The quiz is made up of T/F, multiple choice, and multiple answers (unlimited). I published with no menu, SCORM 1.2, in SkillPort LMS. I have completed the quiz with several different scores both passing and failing but "0" is reported in SkillPort everytime. I have started from scratch and rebuilt the quiz and same thing just happen again. Help! Anyone! I have tried everything I know to do.  [note: I have successfully published many courses and quizes, but this is the first time something like this has happened] I welcome your help.

Hi Alan and Pat,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're experiencing with tracking in your LMS, and as you mentioned Alan, without knowing which browser is causing the information to not be reported it's hard to continue troubleshooting. I'd also suggest looking into this blog post on troubleshooting with your LMS, specifically testing it in SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard testing site and see if you can determine a) if everything works successfully there, which is great information to share with your LMS team or b) if one particular browser causes issues there, let our Support team know.

PS - Welcome to the Heroes community, Pat!

Hi all,

We are having some apparently "random" tracking issues as well and I am hoping that someone out there has a suggestion about how to gather all of the pertinent information and send it directly to the LMS via SCORM.  It seems like an awful waste of time calling Customers and asking them questions when the answers are already in Google analytics and the LMS is capable of housing the info.

I know there are many very intelligent E-Learning Gurus in here.  There must be someone who can think of a way to capture most of the variables and report them with the course data to the LMS so we can do some reporting and quickly determine the cause of these tracking errors.

If you know someone who may be able to help, Pass it on.  Maybe we can all save a lot of time and trouble.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Tom

Hi Thomas,

I don't know of a way to gather all these points within Storyline and use that to send to your LMS, but instead of calling all your users, you could have them use a site such as supportdetails.com which even has a feature to email it to your IT person. I use it regularly here to have people check what version of a browser, flash, etc. they're running.

The best way to debug SCORM communication/tracking issues is to upload the course to SCORM Cloud and watch the debug logs.  I do this all the time for clients with issues.  If it works in SCORM Cloud, but not your LMS, it's your LMS's fault.  If it doesn't work in SCORM Cloud, it's your fault or Storyline's.

Usually, when we run into this with Storyline (lack of completion), it is because of the limitations with how completion is triggered.  It's either when all slides are visited or based on the results of a quiz.  Those models don't serve us well as they are too tied to traditional structures of eLearning.   So we have had to add triggers on load of certain pages to trigger SCORM completion in the LMS.
