Locked/Unlocked Topics

Jul 18, 2013

Hello!

We've recently purchased a Storyline licence (yay!) and I wanted to know if it were possible to build a course that has several topics available and one topic locked. In order to unlock this topic, learners need to complete the other topics (in any order).

If it's possible, would someone be able to tell me how to do this or point me in the direction of some instructions?

Cheers

Matt

Hi Matt - welcome to Heroes

This can be easily achieved by using a couple of variables and using these to control the state of the locked topic button.

In the attached example, I have done the following:

  • Created a True/False variable that corresponds to each topic and set the default value to False
  • Added a trigger to the content slide of each topic that adjusts the respective variable to True when the timeline of the content slide begins
  • On the topic choice slide, I have set the initial state of the topic 3 button to 'disabled' (this is the topic that is locked until topics 1 and 2 have been viewed)
  • On the topic choice slide, I have added a trigger to change the state of the topic 3 button to 'normal' when the timeline of this slide starts but on condition that both T/F variables are equal to True (this unlocks the button, but only when the other topics have been viewed first)

As you have only recently purchased SL, you may not be too familiar with working with variables, states and triggers but there are some great tutorials available:

Working with variables

Adding True/False variables

Adding and Editing States

Adding and Editing triggers

I hope this helps!

Hi Matt

I notice  you are in Australia, have you considered the Certified Articulate Training provided by B Online? http://bonlinelearning.com.au/

We (Omniplex www.omniplex.co.uk ) are the Certified Articulate Training Provider in UK & Europe and I know this exact scenario is covered in training, along with a whole load of other fabulous stuff

Hi Antony and Helen

Thank-you both for your responses. One of the reasons that I wanted to use Storyline to produce our e-learning was the wonderful, helpful community of users that are there if you get stuck with something!

Antony,

Thanks for the links to the tutorials. I've seen a couple of other ones and they are great. Thanks also for the example file. While it looks a bit complicated, I'm sure that once I'm more familiar with Storyline it will seem a lot easier.

Helen,

I am going to enrol in the next training course in Sydney with B Online Learning. By the look of the outline there are lots of interesting things covered!

Cheers

No problem Matt.

When I first started using SL, the prospect of using variables and triggers completely daunted me. But, through trial and error and the wealth of experience and knowledge you will find in Heroes, I'm sure you will soon pick it up.

Good luck!

Antony
