Long Course -- Bookmarking Issues

Oct 07, 2014

We have a course that was built in Storyline and its long...really long -- 2 hours worth of harassment training for your viewing pleasure & to meet California's AB1825 law.  If you're into learning about workplace bullying and harassment, you'll love it.  If not, you'll still love it because we build great courses!

In the past, I would build these courses in Flash and/or HTML utilizing Pipwerks SCORM wrapper.  I chose to go a different route and use Storyline because it would save time in the development process.  The course is broken into 11 modules and consists of about 250 slides or so.  It works great until mod 6 or 7. Then, the bookmarking breaks.

I've read about Storyline putting the location data in suspend and that I can either publish in SCORM 2004 3rd/4th edition or disable the resume feature to fix the issue or I can get rid of X number of slides.  Here's the thing...those options aren't valid.

  • The LMS that will host the course only supports SCORM 1.2.
  • Do you know of any client out there that's okay with no bookmarking support?  I've been in this industry for 12+ years...and I've never had a client that has said there is no need for bookmarking...
  • It's a requirement that the course be 2 hours long -- no such thing as getting rid of content when you need to meet a time stamp like that...

That said...

  1. Is there anything else that can be done?  I've even gone so far as to offer to split the course into 2 parts; however, the client isn't okay with that....
  2. Can someone explain to me why suspend is used for location data?  There is a reason why the RTE includes a lesson_location field...
  3. Even though we're experiencing these problems, Storyline is still a great tool (even upgraded to Storyline 2 the day after it came out) -- just frustrated at the moment and need some help before I lose this client.

As always, I appreciate any help you can offer!

I spent hours searching through the numerous threads and came up with...nothing.  It's the same old story.  Disable bookmarking.

So, based on that, I'm assuming there is nothing that anyone can share with me to help.  Is that right?  If so, okay...I'll hack something together to make it work.

I really would appreciate it though if somebody would tell me why the location data is stored in suspend instead of lesson_location?  That makes absolutely no sense to me.

So, I cut a version of the course from 175 slides to 72 slides by merging the content...but I'm still running into an issue with suspend_data limitations being reached.  By the 40th slide, I'm at 4086 characters in the suspend field.

What all is being written to this field?  Is it just the location?  Does it also write other things into it?  If so, what?  I'll do whatever I can to reduce this, but I'm not sure what else I can do.

I do have a number of embedded videos and quiz questions included.  Do they cause things to be written to the suspend field?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

So, I've run through the course using Fiddler.  It looks like the quiz interactions are the culprit.  The suspend data jumps from 171 characters in module 1 to 1440 characters after a 10 question quiz.  After another ungraded MC question, it jumps from 1440 characters to 1646 characters.

Is there a way, in Storyline, to disable the quiz reporting?  This particular quiz does NOT include a results page...its an ungraded knowledge check...no need for anything to be stored.
