major problem on question import

Apr 15, 2014

Help!!! I've just lost a whole day's work!!

Storyline has been crashing when I try to draw slides from a question bank. Today, when it first hit a problem I got a message to send an error report (which I did) but the whole thing froze at this point and I had to hit CRTL+ALT+DEL, thereby losing three hours' work (yes, I know, my fault for not saving often enough).

I re-did the work, saving frantically all the time, and went to draw the questions again and the same thing happened - except this time I'd saved the work.

I thought it might be because I'd somehow created the question banks in a different module, so I created new ones and imported the questions. Then I tried it again (having carefully saved), and the same thing happened.

Except - this time, when I re-opened the module, all my main slides had disappeared. Like I said, a whole day's work.

What on earth is happening???

Attaching the module if this is any help. Meanwhile, off to lie down in a darkened room.

hi anne,

i downloaded your project file and was able to create question draws from the question banks.

yes i did not see the question slides in the story view.  i noticed that the question slides disappear from the story view when you import them to the question bank.  i dont know how you can bring the question slide back to the story view panel. when you create the questions directly into the question bank, these dont appear anymore in the Story View panel.  so you did not lose them.

Goto Story View and click on Question Banks to manage your questions and question banks.

please make sure that you have the latest update of Storyline to eliminate the chance of a system bug or error that is causing your installation to crash.

i attached your project file with the question draws i created.

hope this helps.

Hi Anne,

I'm so sorry to hear about all the trouble you've had with this.

Caesar, thank you for helping out here!

I've also downloaded the file and I see that there are no scenes or slides in the project. I attempted to add some slides (about 5 or 6 just for testing), inserted a Draw from question bank slide and saved the project. I closed the project and reopened - all of the slides, including the draw were still displaying correctly.

Can you tell us a little about the environment, please? Which version of Storyline do you have installed? To find this, click on Help > About Articulate Storyline

Are you working on your local hard drive? If not, that may be what's causing the problem.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

It may be an issue with the question banks, especially if this only happens after you modify or insert the questions. It doesn't sound like it's an issue to normal content slides, though those are the ones that are disappearing.

Are you able to create a new project file with a test bank and try to recreate the issue? If so, we may need to look closer at the installation.

Again, I'm sorry for all of the trouble and extra work. Hopefully we can find the cause for this and keep it from happening again.

Best,

Christine
