Make a screen recording start in the middle of the timeline?

Aug 09, 2013

Greetings,

I have a course that contains a screen recording that was imported in "try it" mode.  I want each slide to start playing its portion of the screen recording at a certain spot in the timeline (to synchronize with what the narration is saying).  I can get the screen recording to play based on a trigger (beginning of timeline, mouse click, etc.) -- but I can't get it to play based solely on its position in the timeline.  I have the screen recording positioned at the spot in the timeline I want it to play.  But it doesn't play.

I can work around this by duplicating the slide, and having the first slide shown for 5 seconds (playing the first 5 seconds of narration for that slide), then automatically go to the 2nd, identical slide, which has the screen recording set to play when the timeline starts. But it seems like there ought to be a more elegant way to make this work (like, have the screen recording start whre I have it positioned on the timeline).

Am I missing something?  I've attached a short sample in case that would help answer the question.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi Deborah, I am a little confused by what you want to do - Do you want the screen recording to play automatically or do you want the user to click to make the recording start?

The purpose of the try it mode is to let the user interact with the simulation by, in the case of your example, clicking on the hotspot on each screen. The screen recording will not play until the user clicks the hotspot no matter where you put it in the timeline.

If you want this to be more of a demo in which the screen recordings play automatically then you can do one of two things.

1. Select Insert >Record Screen >  pick the recording from the list of available recordings and then insert it as  step-by-step view mode instead of try mode. This will add the recording to your story (in a new screen). When you preview it you will see it runs automatically.

2. If you don't want to insert the screen recording again then you can try modifying the try it version by changing the Play Media trigger on each slide. Right now the trigger says to play the media when the user clicks the hotspot.  You want to change it to play when the timeline starts.  (note that this does not mean at the beginning of the slide timeline - it means at the point in the timeline where the screen recording starts)

Hi Nancy,

I have a long simulation, and most of the slides I want to advance by user interaction -- but there are 2 or 3 places that the application I'm recording advances on its own.  The narration explains what the application is doing at those points, but I have to control the timing to make the narration sync up with what the application is doing in the recording.

I reimported the recording in view mode and used the "view mode" version for those slides...and now it plays where I have it in the timeline -- so that did the trick.  Thanks!

Deborah
