Making a button unclickable?
Apr 11, 2013
I am working on a "How To" for our website using the interactive screen shots...
I found a button (Circle with the "?") that I would like to use to draw people's attention to hotspots you can click to get more information.
Is there any way to use the button as an image and disable the ability to click on it? I tried saving it as a picture but when I inserted it back into the presentation it was extremely blurry.
The only way I can think of is to simply not add a trigger for it.
Thanks!

Hi Claire,
Welcome to the community!
Can you insert a shape over the button and then make the shape transparent and with no lines?
Someone posted a similar question last night...
How Do I Deactivate Links After They've Been Used Once?
I answered the question over there if you want to check it out... I had the same problem when I was using images as links and this was the way I got it working for me... If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be interested in hearing...
Hi Nicole,
Sorry, not sure what you're referring to here? Unless I misunderstood, Claire had asked how to make a "clickable" button unclickable
"Is there any way to use the button as an image and disable the ability to click on it"?
, and I'd suggested she could overlay a transparent shape.
Did I misunderstand her question?
I would go with Rebecca's solution of using a trasparent shape or even a hotspot with no trigger
The other way would be to remove the triggers and delete the states
Sorry Rebecca in my early-morning, non-caffeinated state I wrote your name instead of Claires
HI Nicole,
I totally relate to the non-caffeinated state - no worries. Enjoy your (now hopefully appropriately and not over-caffeinated) day!
Thank you for all the replies (still very new to articulate so sorry if it seemed like an easy question)
I think the best thing to go with from what I have found is the hotspot without a trigger.
Does anyone know if it is possible that when you hover over that unclickable button, the mouse doesn't change into the hand, indicating that there is something there they need to click? (just trying to make this as simple and "fool-proof" as possible).
Thanks
Can't you just get rid of all the button's states besides normal?
edit: nvm, I see someone else suggested this
Claire,
If you right-click the hot spot you'll see that there's an option to remove the checkmark from show hand on cursor hover.
But, this is one reason I often use transparent shapes instead. One less step!
I just tried this and to make the button unclickable and everything you want, I honestly think the easiest thing to do is just delete those states. Plus, you're not adding objects to the timeline that could clutter things up. Just my 2 cents...
The most sensible solution is remove states and triggers, but I don't think it is the easiest (if you count mouse clicks) that one is to cover it with a hotspot.
Rebecca, thank you! that worked (now it looks like how I had imagined it in my head).
I'll just go with the hotspot without the show hand on cursor hover checked
Hi Claire,
Glad it worked. As to the other ways, I say, to each her own One man's treasure...and all of that.
Could you just do a screenshot of the button and make it an image?
Some good advice here.
I have a situation where I have eight buttons with check marks after visited and I wanted students to go down an exact path...so I just followed Rebecca and went with a transparent shape...works perfectly.
Thanks Rebecca and others :)
