Making multi-choice options permanent

Feb 16, 2021

I created some multi choice questions initially. I then edited some of the options to make them better. When I preview the questions I move the mouse over the options and if they are one of the edited options the initial version shows.

Is there a setting to make the edited option permanent or am I supposed to delete the question and start from new everytime I want to make an adjustment?

Hi, Glen,

  • The radio buttons for multi-choice questions have multiple states.
  • Any text editing you do in the Normal state should carry over to the other states.
    • However, if you edit the text in another state, that breaks its connection with the Normal state. In that case, you would need to edit multiple states to ensure they all have the same text. (Or just delete that response entirely, and then add a new response. Or, yes, start over in a new question slide.)
  • In my experience, the radio-button objects can be a bit buggy when adjusting their sizes. For example, changing the width on the overall object hasn't always changed it for every state. And that has made the text wrap at different points.
  • Here's quick way to check a given response:
    • Go to the States panel.
    • Select a response.
    • Move your mouse over the states. When you do this (without being in the edit-state mode), you can quickly see how the response will look as it changes states.

Hey, Glen! I attempted to replicate this behavior on my end, but the modified choices are showing as expected.

I'm hoping to isolate this further through the details below.

  • Does this happen on all of the 'question' slides that you edit?
  • Is there perhaps a trigger set by 'moving the mouse over the options'?
  • How do you preview the course - through the 'preview project' button, through your LMS, or through SCORM Cloud?

I'll also be glad to check out the .story file where this is observed so I can further look into this and hopefully spot the culprit.

Thanks for your response Judy,

My problem is exactly how you defined with inconsistent states for some of  the radio buttons. In fact for some of them all five states were different.

To be honest I am not sure how I have changed the states as in this particular test I only thought I was using the 'normal' state. But anyway I know how to solve it now.

Thanks once again

Glen

Hi Luiza,

Thanks for your response.

Basically I have 200 multi choice questions which consist of 200 different photographs and nine options. I completed the initial test and showed the boss. He decided he wanted to change the words and shading which I said was fine.

I decided the quickest way was just to copy and paste each one on the slide view. I must say I was doing it kind off and on so I may have copied from different slides which may have lead to the problem.

In terms of previewing I just use the Storyline 360 preview function as that usually meets my need.

As in my response to Judy regarding the states it seems that there is no consistency within the states on the slides. This may be due to the fact that I did note some of these inconsistencies early in the process but thought it was errors made by myself so I updated them randomly.

As I also confirmed to Judy I only want the Normal state so I don't know how I have ended up with different things happening on different states.

Thanks once again for considering my problem.

Regards

Glen

Hi again, Glen,

You said you "only want the Normal state."

FYI: A question response must have a Normal state and a Selected state. The Selected is used for scoring.

You can, however, delete the HoverDown, and Disabled states. Those are automatically built-in to all buttons. But they aren't required for using a button or for scoring a question. So if the problem you're having is with any of those states, the quickest fix is to get rid of them.

Note that you could also delete any built-in state, and then create a new version by duplicating the Normal state. Then edit the states as desired (e.g., to change a color or add a glow for hovering). That reconnects the states, which may make future edits easier.

Good luck!
