Markers and Master Slides

Apr 15, 2013

I was able to add markers to my master slide on a separate slide layer which is great.  Unfortunately, this causes Storyline to lock up.  I can't preview the slide nor can I publish the project.  Is there a workaround for this?

Thanks,

L.

Hi there, L.!

That does sound odd. Markers will usually work on Masters, even though they're going to appear behind your content, but they shouldn't cause the course to lock up.

This happens when previewing and publishing, correct? Are you working with local files?

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you can, try creating a new, blank Storyline file. If you create a marker on a slide master in that new file, do you see the same issue?

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks,

Christine

Hi Christine,

I am working on my C drive and I have verified that I do not have more than 260 characters or special characters in the naming convention.  Unfortunately it is still not working.

I have the markers in a layer in the master view and a trigger set to show the layer.  Attached is my .story file if you would like to take a look.

Thanks,

L.

Hi L,

There is definitely something going on with the original master, but it doesn't seem to be the markers. I've looked at this for quite a while and finally decided to try and rebuild the master and see if I could figure out what element on the master is causing the lock up.

So far, I can't seem to pinpoint it. I'm wondering if the master simply became corrupted. If you attempt to use a blank layout (from a new master) and switch back to the original, it will never show the original - it sticks to the blank page in the new master.

I noticed a few other strange things, after modifying the original master after a while, it would finally preview, but the entire slide was gray...probably not a good sign.

So, I copied every piece at a time, checking to make sure each icon, layer and trigger wouldn't cause the lock up. After copying everything over to a new master, it seems to load just fine.

I'm attaching the file with the new master. Keep in mind, though, I didn't test every function, nor did I work to make sure everything was lined up exactly the same. I just wanted to see if the course would preview correctly after moving the content over to a new master.

Can you take a look for me, please? Is the preview working for you with this file?

Thanks!

Christine
