I think you are right. I had modified the player to be "chromeless" and set the slides/project background to white for a clean look. Opening a different project with different player/project settings displayed the normal marker drop-down menu. I'm wondering exactly WHAT setting in my chromeless project is responsible for the change in the markers?
The chromeless player would be different than your overall Storyline color scheme as detailed here. Did you also confirm you're working with a DPI setting of 96? Not using that settting can cause elements to go missing or display incorrectly.
