Some of the markers on my project will not open correctly.
When you click on them, the audio starts but the text doesn't appear. Or if it does appear, there's no white box behind it so it's on an transparent background.
I've tried removing the ones affected and adding them back in, but that doesn't seem to work.
Sorry you're having trouble, Kassy! What version of Storyline are you using? Also, would you mind sharing a sample slide with me? I'd like to take a closer look at what's going on. Thanks!
Hi Alyssa, I'm just updating Storyline as we speak, but I have been using version 3.6.11979.0.
That would be great if I could send it to you. Do you have an email address I could email it to please, as the file is confidential and therefore, I cannot really share it on the discussion forum?
I have another query about markers please. Why is it, that once you've created a marker and added the text, when you go back into the marker to edit the text and need to change the size of the marker - the handles have disappeared and it's really difficult to be able to grab the edges of the box to resize it. Is there someway of getting the handles to come back?
Hmm, that's odd! You should be able to resize the marker caption after editing the text. Check out this screen recording of how it works on my end, and let me know if you're seeing something different. Thanks!
No that didn't work I'm afraid. Here's an example slide (I couldn't upload on the case page you sent as a link for me - it kept saying internet connect lost, when my internet seems fine...)
Thanks for sharing the file. I saw the same behavior in your existing marker, but adding a new marker it worked fine. I recorded a quick Peek video on how I entered text and resized it just in case you spot something different than what you did.
One other question, did you originally create this in Storyline 360 - or did you start out from say Storyline 1 or 2? Any other thoughts or ideas on how it was set up and that may help me spot something else!
I get exactly the same result as you do on your video. I add text in the same way too.
The only thing I do differently, is that I resize the bold (title) text in the box to 12 and the main body text to 10.
I’ve created a little trial – I’ve created 2 new files, with 2 markers in each. One marker is text as is (no formatting) and the second is formatted (to 12 and 10).
I’ve created one file with no images and the second has images in it (my slides are heavy on the images, so I figured it was worth checking this).
All is working fine at the moment, but as I’ve said before, it doesn’t happen straight away. I’ve saved them, closed them and re-opened them and so far they’re both ok.
I’ll let you know if it changes!
I didn’t use Storyline 1 or 2 to create these, I’ve only used Storyline since the summer.
The latest files I’ve created I only started at the beginning of this month and they are doing this too.
I’ll let you know how I get on with the experiment!
Thanks for that information. I gave it a test, and I still saw the handles on the copied slide. I also tried duplicating the slide and that worked normally too. Can you try that (you'll see Duplicate as an option when you Right Click on the slide in the Scenes view)?
I was working on a file yesterday, that when I copied the slide the markers handles stayed too.
I also had problems with markers which would not give me the text box when I applied them. I had to close down the file and articulate and open it again to get it to work.
I’ve no idea why I’m having so many problems – there doesn’t seem to be any rules to when these things happen!
I know you updated to the latest version of Storyline 360, can you also tell me what version of Windows you're using and if you're working on local project files? Working from a network/shared drive is known to cause some odd behavior (Dropbox also counts as a network/shared drive). Take a look at some of the best practices here for managing your project files.
If all the problems I’m having (todays problem with the markers has been the text box not appearing, so I have to shut articulate down and reopen the file to get it to work) are due to Dropbox, I can save all my new files to my hard drive – that’s fine.
But what does that mean for all the files I have on Dropbox already? Will moving them fix the problem, or do I need to recreate them all? (eek!)
You shouldn't have any problems as long as you move the files to your hard drive first, then open them.
You can always place a copy of your project in Dropbox for backup purposes, but avoid re-opening the file until you've moved it back to your local hard drive.
Let us know if copying the file to your hard drive and opening it from there does the trick!
I’m still having problems with the markers. I have now saved all the files to my hard drive (so that Dropbox cannot affect them) and I’ve also ensured that I’ve used the correct file naming protocol.
The problem where the marker part opens and looks corrupt seems to have been resolved by doing this.
However, I am now getting markers that do not open – the marker goes grey (visited state) but the box doesn’t open. You have to click it again, or sometimes just hover your mouse over it – for it to open.
I’ve tried replacing the marker with a new one, but this doesn’t seem to help.
Plus, the issue happens sometimes and is fine other times.
The handles on the edges of the marker boxes are still disappearing sometimes too. The file I made yesterday (from scratch) has markers on each page – some have the handles and some don’t…
Any more ideas about what I can do to try to fix this?
No that's not it I'm afraid. They're all the same. I'm having loads of problems with markers not reacting as they should and also doing different things each time you use them!
I had a great holiday - and I hope outside of these marker troubles you did too!
Can you share the latest file you're working on so that we could take a look at that fresh version? It's always best to work and test with your example to confirm we're using all the same settings and features.
Upload here using the Add Attachment button and we'll take a look!

Sure thing, Kassy! If you're still seeing this problem after updating Storyline, you can send the file to us privately by clicking here.
Hi Alyssa
I've upgraded and I'm using the html5 file rather than the html file, so we'll see how that goes in the user testing.
One problem though that still persists, is some of the text in the markers on the left margin are not displaying correctly, see screen shots attached.
Any ideas what's doing this? I've tried changing the paragraph settings, but then it looks misaligned to the title text in the marker.
And you can also see from the employee entrance screen shot, the 'f' from factory has been cut off at the top...
Thanks
Kassy
Hi Kassy,
I'm not sure what could have caused the text to be cut off in that way, but I have an idea of how you can fix it.
Try adding a new marker, then use the format painter to apply the formatting of the new marker to the original one. That should fix any margin errors.
Let me know if that helps!
Thanks Alyssa, I'll try that.

Hi Alyssa
If I create a new text box it's fine. But using markers from the original file - no handles! All my files are like these (I have quite a lot!).
See recording attached.
I don't know if its' something that happens after I've saved and closed the file. I.e. I don't know when exactly the handles disappear...
Thanks
Kassy
Thanks for that screen recording, Kassy. That's really strange!
Try importing one of those slides into a new Storyline file. Does that fix the issue?
If not, can you send me a copy of the original Storyline file? I'd like to take a closer look. Thanks!

Hi Ashley
While I’ve been working on my project this afternoon, I’ve noticed something.
When you create a marker in a slide, add text, resize, change formatting (12 and 10) the marker works fine.
Then copy that slide.
The marker loses its handles in the copied slide…
Can you try it and see if you get the same?
Kassy

Morning Ashley
I don’t really feel like I’m making progress – the markers still behaving strangely and I have no idea why!
We use Windows 10 and hold our files on Dropbox.
I’ll take a look at the link you’ve provided.

Hi Kassy
have you checked the marker options to see if any of these boxes are ticked - that could explain some differing behaviours
Hi Wendy
No that's not it I'm afraid. They're all the same. I'm having loads of problems with markers not reacting as they should and also doing different things each time you use them!
Very odd indeed!
Thank you for your suggestion though :-)

Hi Kassy!
I don't see a file attached here, which is good since it sounds like you did not want to attach it to the forums.
