Markers Not Re-Opening

Feb 26, 2019

Hi, I've tried to find a discussion thread on this elsewhere, but am not having any luck.

I have multiple markers through my course (on various slides and layers) and I'm able to interact with each (see the pop-up content) and navigate forward just fine, but when I click the previous button or navigate to a previous slide through the menu, you cannot click the markers to expose the content/text.

I have each marker set to change to visited after being clicked, but this only changes the visual/colors (doesn't disable, right?). And, I have my slide properties set to resume saved state.

How can I fix this?

Hi everyone,

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 86, we’ve included important fixes and new features.

One of the new features we’ve included:

  • Fixed: Markers on a layer didn't open when learners revisited them.

Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You’ll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Courtney,

The attached file is a simple example that I have based on your comments above, so I hope I have correctly understood what your problem is.

I have used two slides, with an additional layer on each slide and a number of markers. The first of these markers changed the state to Visited and the remainder to Selected (just in case this made a difference to their operation). In every case the markers appeared to work correctly and when I revisited the slides, either using the Back and Next buttons or via the menu, the markers still worked correctly.

At present I can't find a problem. Are you able to share your Storyline file to assist with finding the error? Thanks.

Hi Patrick,

This conversation is a bit dated, and I'm not sure that Courtney is still subscribed, and it looks like they did not share their file for assistance.

If you're running into a similar issue, it may be best to start anew. Can you share what you are experiencing with your project?

I'd be happy to look at your project file to investigate what's happening with your permission. You can share it publicly here or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

I am having the same problem. Markers on a layer work on first visit but don't work if I proceed to the next slide and then come back to them.

I tried copying all the elements on that layer to a new slide and the formatting worked fine. Markers work on first and subsequent visits.

I have markers on the base layer of several more slides in this project that work fine. It's just the ones that I add to additional layers that don't work properly.

Edit: I have used markers on secondary layers in a previous course with no issues. The properties seem to be the same for those as for the ones that are not working properly.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing in your project.

We do have an open issue specific to markers on layers not opening on revisit. I've added this conversation to our report so that we can share any updates with you here.

Current workaround:

Change layer properties when revisiting to "Reset to initial state"

Hi Leslie,

I have experienced the exact same issue described here.  Has there been a resolution to this? (I'm not currently on the latest version of Storyline so if a fix has been applied I will update)

My issue - Markers with a 'visited' state working fine - able to click, close, click again when on the slide.

If I click next, then return to previous slide with the markers on, the markers no longer open when clicked.

I am using the visited state of the markers to enable the next button, so to 'reset slide to initial state' when returning, which is a solution above, means a user has to go through them all again if they skip back, which isn't ideal. I'm hoping there has been a solution to this.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Brendan,

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here, or in private by opening a support case so we can test your course? We'll delete it when we're done troubleshooting.

Just to set your expectations, the issue reported in this post where markers placed on layers will no longer open when accessed/clicked during slide revisit is still open. If you are being affected by this known issue, we'll give you an update through this post once a fix becomes available.

Hi Jose, I have discovered this is also happening to me with a current project file. I have the markers within a third layer of a slide and when I press the back button from the following slide they do not reactivate/ I am unable to revist them. I published my project for review and my colleague also picked up on this. I have the latest update of Storyline so not sure why this is happening?

I have the same issue plus one additional point: The marker on the base layer will no longer open when accessed/clicked during slide revisit. Additionally, I want the "next" button to only show once all four buttons + the marker are visited. However, I have to return to the base layer to make that happen. Without the marker, I can do that, but as soon as I include the marker, it no longer works.

Hello Jennifer and SG,

I'm sorry to hear that you ran into this issue as well. The bug discussed in this thread is still open, but we'll be sure to leave a message here as soon as a fix is released for it.

SG,

I fixed your project file for you. You had a duplicate marker on Layer 4 that was cover the marker on the base layer that needed to be clicked to make the 'Next' button appear. Deleting this layer corrected the behavior. I've attached your fixed project file.

Hello SG,

Sorry for the confusion. I fixed the navigation for the "Next" button, but for the marker to work on revisit, you'll need to set the revisit behavior of the slide to "Reset to initial state"

I understand that this will reset the progress made on the buttons in the slide, but we are still currently tracking a known issue that causes markers to not work properly when the revisit behavior is set to either "Automatically decide" or "Resume saved state". We'll leave a message here when we have any new updates to share!
