Memory Issue

Jul 11, 2014

Hi,

My storyline file is too large around (50 -60 slides in module ) with audios, videos, interactivities.

Whenever I work on this type of course, I use to get low memory issue and I always lost my unsaved changes.

Can you please suggest/guide me, How to tackle with this issue.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Akash,

When working on Storyline files that may become larger, you'll want to ensure your saving as Storyline does not include an auto save or auto recovery feature. I'd also check that you're following along with the guidelines here to ensure you're working locally. Also, you'll want to ensure that you're adhering to the system requirements detailed here. I'd also recommend closing down any other programs that aren't essential while you're working in Storyline.

Hi Ashley

Thanks a ton for your reply . I have gone through your guidelines and would like to mention that I always save story file on local drive & publish output on local drive itself.

When I compared, I found my system configuration higher to the one suggested in your reply:-

Hardware - CPU:2.50GHz, Memory:4GB, Available disk space:100 GB, Display:1280x1024

Software - Windows 8(64 bit), .Net Runtime 4.5.1, Adobe flash player 10, Flash 14.0.0.125, Browser:IE 11.0.9, MS Office 2010

Besides all the checks I still experience issue while saving my storyline. I have to save it after every tiny piece of change I do, then also sometimes it doesn't work.

My file size is approximately 120MB.

Thanks,

Hi Akash,

Thanks for sharing that information here. The file size doesn't sound particularly large - and I've heard of larger. I'm curious to know if you're running a lot other programs while working in Storyline? Are you able to take a look at how much memory Storyline is using while open and running from your Task manager?

It may also be worth conducting the repair of Storyline in the event that something is off with your installation and if you'd like to share the .story file with us we're also happy to take a look and see how it behaves on our end.

Hi,

I was having a lot of issues with this on my 4gb RAM machine. It crashed consistently but I had over 200 slides. I don't save anything on my local drive because of the backup situation here. I bet that would increase the speed quiet a bit.

I've doubled my RAM and increase the processor speed to 64 bit with a solid state hard drive and Windows 8. The program is still slow to load but haven't had any crashing yet.

It's a good idea to create chunks when possible. I will try adjusting the auto save.

Thanks.

Hi Akash,

I've had this same problem before. The size of the course isn't always a factor for me. Sometimes it is the complexity of the course. My 400Mb simple course will save just fine but my 100Mb course with 20-30 triggers and state changes on each page is the worst thing to try to save. Here are the things I do/try in odrder to find success while saving ~98% of the time:

  • Like Ashley said, ensure all other programs are closed down
  • When I know I need to edit my troublesome course, I do a full shutdown and then open only Storyline
  • Don't do anything else on your PC once you click save (go for a short walk or get some water)
  • Try to save to another location on your drive/network if you get the error message
  • I also "Save As" each time - filename_1.0, filename_1.1, etc. (not certain if this works or if it is something that I've just told myself that works). The good thing about doing this is that if the save doesn't work, you can always remove a big chunk of the course that you didn't edit, save the stuff you did edit (likely much smaller size now) and recombine again later with the most recent previous version
  • And like Maria said, break up your course into smaller peices

Good luck! Hopefully this low memory problem will disappear in a future update.
