I've created a sample course for a client - trying to convince them to get Storyline - but the menu isn't working. I've only got one day left on the trial and I have to get this working!
The menu displays, but clicking the items does not navigate anywhere. Has anyone had this happen? And more to the point, has anyone found a solution?
Where are the course files located that you are trying to view (your PC, a network drive, a web server, etc.) and how do you publish it out? For Flash, HTML5 or iOS (ipad)? What device are you using to view the course?
The files are currentely located on my local drive. They will be tested in the LMS assuming I can get everything working, but for now just locally. I'm publishing to HTML5. Eventually my client will want to run this on both PCs and iPads, but for the purposes of this test, we're running on PCs.
Anyone have any suggestions for what else I can check? The client ran the test and understandably said the menu issue was a deal breaker. I want them to use Storyline, but not if I can't get this working!
Bless you for this post. I couldn't figure out why on earth my menu links weren't working, and I don't know if I ever would have thought about the scene-vs.-page thing. Thanks!
Hi! I am now having the same problem. I entered the menu items as the first slide in the scene (2.1, 3.1, 4.1 etc.) and I still can't launch from the sidebar menu. I have tried doing this in both "preview project" and "publish." The module is stored in my PC Local Drive, personal drive. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks Kelli Roche
Is the player menu set to Restricted, Free, or Locked? You'll want to make sure it's set to Free if you want to use the menu to jump ahead in the slide list.
Hi! I do have the player menu set to FREE. (Cog wheel selections.) When I click on the items in the sidebar menu, nothing happens. Each item in the menu is the number and description of the first slide in the scene for each scene.
We'll need to take a look at your file to pinpoint what's going on here. You can share it here in this thread, or you can send it directly to our Support Engineers if you'd rather keep it private.
I started a request for assistance previously under my name, Kelli Roche. Alyssa Gomez asked me to share the file with her to get some assistance with it. It was too large to share with e-mail attachment, so
I sent it to Dropbox and shared it from there. I don't think the dropbox file allowed me to add comments. Anyway when you get the file "Cage Wash Videos.story" it is from me.
I am trying to find out why the sidebar menu is not working.
Did you try clicking this link and uploading the content to the "Submit a Support Case" form? If the file is too large to attach to the form, you can also put a link to the file stored in Dropbox directly in the form. A third option would be to make the file smaller by doing a "Save As" and sending us a scaled-down version that only includes the problematic slides.
The email address that is associated with this thread is more like a "No Reply" address, so I don't think I'll receive the link through email. Let me know if you're able to send it to us through this form, instead!
Perfect! I can see that you sent your file through case# 00998331. We'll do some testing, and you should hear back from one of the Support Engineers shortly!
It seems like changing "scenes" to "slides" is working for people...unless I'm doing it wrong, it's not for me. I changed all of my "jump to scene" to "jump to slide" and then chose the first slide in the scene. My menu items are still grayed out even though they've been visited. Is there something else when people say "use slides rather than scenes?"
I reset my Menu and it worked (where I've visited becomes grey to then go back and re-visit if desired)...but then I deleted slides that I did not want in the Menu (every slide of my "Try Its"), and now it's not working again. I've done this in the past where I can delete slides from a scene and the scene still marks as visited in the Menu...??? I'm not sure what's happening?
Hey there, Sara. This sounds like one of those situations where it might be a good idea for us to see the actual setup of your file. Can you attach your .story file here? You can also share it with me here privately, if you need to.

Hi!
By chance is your navigation set to "restricted." That setting prevents learners from moving forward in a menu.
Go to your Player and click Menu.
From there, click "Additional options" and check your navigation settings.
Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, it's set to "Free" so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Figured it out. The menu items were scenes not pages. Changed from scene to first page in scene and they work just fine. Phew!
I'm having that same problem, how did you go in and change it to first page in scene?

Alyssa,
HI! I put the file in Dropbox and shared the file with you at this same e-mail address.

Alyssa,
Hi! Here is the link to the Articulate module I was discussing with you. I'll also insert it in the support file.

Thanks! That solves it! (Using slides rather than scenes.)
Glad you were able to find what you needed here Walt.
