Mixing Interactions and other things

Jun 10, 2014

Hello

I have an mcq interaction. I want students to explain why they have made a certain choice. This explanation is not machine-judged. I have added a Text Entry box to the page containing the mcq. This works ok (I still have to put some controls in it but I think I can do that) and when the students presses Submit, we move on to the next page.

Now... what I would like is NOT to move to the next page yet. I would like the student to submit the interaction and then STAY on the same page AND display a layer containing some new information. Then the student clicks a button and moves to the next page.

I have not managed to achieve this and once the interaction is submitted it seems to go to the next slide automatically. I have not found a way (yet) of bringing it back to the same slide.

I am sure it must be possible but I am missing something.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Andrew,

If I have read what you want correctly.

I would have a button on the base layer to submit the interaction (submit text) and have this display on the layer using the reference function to display the text entry the student has entered or whatever new information you desire.

Also on the layer have a created next button that will then jump to the next slide.

I am assuming you have space for the text entry on the base slide and you would need to have this hidden when displaying the layer with the text entered in the same spot.  If that is what you want to achieve.

You can also choose which items on the the base layer is to be displayed, this is done in the timeline from the layer as you can expand the base layer objects and select the eye icon to hide or display when the layer appears.

Also check the settings for the slide which is the gear icon located on the bottom right hand side of the window once you have opened the slide.  You may want to turn of the previous and next buttons and change the option of slide advances automatically to user.

Furthermore check there isn't a jump top next slide trigger as this is added automatically by Storyline.  If you turn off the next option as above this will remove the automatically added trigger as well.

Hope this helps.

Hello Andrew

Thanks for the nice answer. I think the main problem I have is that when my custom-made button is clicked and the interaction is submitted the system moves on to the next slide automatically. And there seems to be nothing that I can do to disable that (I have turned off the buttons on that slide as you suggested).

Any clues would be helpful.

Have a look at the attached file and see if that's what you want (never mind the weird question ). I edited the "Continue' triggers on the correct/incorrect layers to show another layer instead of jumping tot he next slide. If you don't provide feedback in the question, you could also a similar trigger directly to the submit button. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Hi Michael,

I have looked at the story file you attached and just want to make sure we are on the same page.

The user can select any of the choices and then click submit and it will display Correct or Incorrect layer as per standard mcq and then user clicks Continue and it will display the MoreInfo layer you have created.  This is working well.

Then once the user clicks the continue from the MoreInfo layer it proceeds to the next slide (in this case 1.2).

Is the issue that you do not want the slide to progress to 1.2 and need to stay on 1.1 so the user can then enter text and then move onto next page?

If so then the text entry section could be placed in the MoreInfo layer as part of the caption. Or alternatively you could have it display once the user clicks the 2nd continue as another layer with another continue etc.

Sorry if I am going in circles, just getting my head around what you want to achieve.

Cheers

Andrew
