Mobile Player for HTML5 Content from Storyline 3

Mar 30, 2018

Is there a way to turn off or modify the mobile player that the HTML5 content uses from SL3 (this is not the old AMP)?  There's a pause button I'd like to defeat and my menu item titles aren't wrapping as the settings indicate.  Screen shot attached.

We wanted a HelpDesk phone number to be visible at all times so we put it in the player.  On the desktop player, you can pin it to the top.  In the responsive player, it automatically collapses it into a menu.  This isn't ideal for customers who are a little less savvy in navigating.  I set the longer menu items to wrap within the player settings, but this doesn't seem to carry over to the responsive player.

Additionally, there is a pause button on the responsive player that is problematic.  There are certain times when we do not want the user to have the capability to pause.

Thanks, Meghan!

It sounds like you're hitting two different roadblocks here. Try these tips to get around them:

  1. To make the help desk phone number visible at all times on mobile devices, you could add it to the Slide Master. Any text that you add to the slide master will appear on all slides using that slide master layout.

You could also add the number to the title field in the player. While it won't be automatically visible, you can click the Menu icon to view the phone number. Here's a sample link you can test on your mobile device to see what I mean.
  2. To remove the pause button from certain slides where you do not want the user to have the capability to pause, simply remove the seekbar in the Slide Properties window.

I don’t mean to be rude, but those are already actions I have considered.

This has been a last minute add on and changing the master at this point means making a lot of changes to the content on the slide as well. Additionally, it was requested that it be separate from the slide content so as not to compete for attention and take up real estate. Our slide dimensions are precisely designed to match content, so that means I have to either resize all content or resize my slide size which ultimately skews content.

The problem with adding the tech number as a title is two fold. First, there is a character limit so the full message I am being asked to provide will not fit. It is 4 characters too long. Second, the title in the player has to match the title of the project and ultimately the title specified in the IMS manifest. It’s not realistic for me to have a project titled with our help desk phone number in our portfolio files.

Can you tell me why the longer menu items are not wrapping as I’ve specified in the player configurations?

Hi Meghan,

The responsive player is designed to collapse, wrap or move items to allow for the best display of your content on a mobile device. I'm not sure what settings you were using in your player configurations that you hoped would change the wrapping behavior, but if you'd like to share those with me I'm happy to take a look.

Perhaps instead of adding that information directly to a player tab you could look at creating a tab that:

  • acts as a lightbox to another slide to display it. The tab could read something much shorter such as "Need help?" and on the new slide it would display contact
  • set up a player tab that uses either the "Jump to file/url" or "send email to" trigger and use those to connect with your Tech team

I hope those other ideas help.
