Modifying Feedback Master Button
May 03, 2012
I can modify the Feedback Master successfully with one exception. Changes I make to the button are not reflected in the course, either in previous mode, or when published. Above is the Correct Answer feedback master. I've done a lot of editing, including font color, background color, and inserting a character. Below is what happens when the Learner gets a correct response. Notice that the button doesn't reflect changes from the master.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Hi, Rebecca - Try this. Move that button placeholder off the slide. I'm not sure if you can delete it safely. Draw a new button or object in its place. Now take a look at the trigger on the placeholder. It should say something like "hide this layer". Duplicate that trigger on your new custom button. Profit.
Hmm... It doesn't seem to want to work now. Trying a modification of this.
Hi Rebecca,
On the Feedback Master, you're editing a placeholder, not the button itself. You can only edit the text styles including the background. So, when you do make a change, the change will only occur on newly created questions.
With that being said, I was able to add my own button to the Feedback Master layout. Again, it'll only show up in newly created questions.
If you'd rather not mess with that, you can always use the Format Painter to copy the style of your button to the other questions.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for replying. I'm spending WAY too much time on this and could of course use Format Painter. But it's hard for me to let go once I've started something.
I tried both of your suggestions, and I'm still not getting this to work. New slides created after making change are behaving (for me) same as existing slides.
Re deleting this button in Feedback master, I'd tried this before posting, and you CAN safely do it...because it recreates itself anyway. Tenacious!
Re creating a button on the Feedback master, I just tried this, but the original placeholder button always appears, even if I hide it in the timeline in the master. So clearly, Brian, I'm missing something!
Not a show stopper, but it would be nice to be able to format it to match the color scheme.
Also, in terms of UI, UX, if this cannot be changed in the Master, should there perhaps be a prompt indicating this? As a user, when I "see" the change "working" in the master, I expect my modification "took" and am surprised to discover that's not so.
Time to walk the dog. Later.
Hi,
I dont know if this sounds a little stupid.. but after making the changes in the master slide, did you reset the slide so that the changes are reflected?
Hey, Brian. I was able to add my own button as well. But it doesn't serve the same purpose as the default close button. The default close button appears on the layer itself in the base layer and is editable. When I give the new button on my master the trigger "Hide this layer" it doesn't take as I would expect it to.
Tx for the thought, Sayuj, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on this button, probably because of what Brian said above about it's being a placeholer.
Steve, I'm also finding that it's not "taking." A conundrum, eh?
During the beta I could have sworn I saw this working. It could have been a demo from one of the staff, David A. maybe?
Hi everyone,
I created a quick screencast that explains how the Feedback Masters work & how to create your own Continue button:
http://www.articulate.com/support/contact/screencast.php?screencastid=88073412448e49698b346d0ccce5378f
Makes sense. My trouble was I was trying to replicate the existing continue button behavior exactly. The default button hides the layer.
As I stated in the screencast, we automatically generate the button based upon the text styles in the Feedback Master. Thus, the button is created in the slide itself & not the Feedback Master. That's why it shows up in the Timeline of the slide with the Hide Layer and Jump to Next Slide Triggers. All you need to do is add the triggers for the custom button in the Feedback Master and it'll work as expected.
Brian and Steve, tx SO much. So very easy, once you know what you're doing. I'm good to go now and very happy that this is so easily doable.
BTW, the new master DOES apply to existing slides. Happy about that as well.
Glad to hear that it worked out for you!
Hi everyone,
sorry to restart this thread again, but I have troubles replicating your solution.
Althoug my own continue button works very fine, the "hide layer" trigger doesn't work.
When I go back from the result slide to review the quiz, all feedbacks stay there. When I clicked the built-in continue button, the feedbacks are hidden when going back.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Hi Johanna,
Check the order of your triggers & make sure that the Hide Layer trigger occurs before jumping to the next slide.
Hi Brian,
thanks for your reply.
I've added a demo .story file here. Maybe you can figure out what's wrong?
The triggers seem to be in the right place.
Hi Johanna,
You need to add a new button to the Results Slide that actually initiates the quiz review via the Review results action:
Once you have that in place, the review will work as expected.
Hi Brian,
thaniks for your answer, but my question is, why the built in Continue button works in my demo.story and my own button does not.
What I mean:
In the preview mode, I answer all my questions and go forward with "My button". When I use the prev button in the result slide, all feedbacks are still there.
When doing the same with the built in "Continue" button, the feedbacks are hidden when navigating back.
HI! I was playing around with the feedback masterslides. I could not figure out:
1. how to know what slides actually use a particular feedback master
2. how to remove the feedback master on the slide that use it
I had to open another instance of SL, create a new project, and copy the scenes and slides to it. I found tha to be a long process.
Is there a fsster way to do this.
thanks.
Hi group
I am using the Feedback Master to customise my feedback, and found this thread really useful. It doesn't quite work for me, though.
I've added a button on the correct and incorrect feedback layouts and put a Hide This Layer (first trigger) and Jump Next Slide trigger (second trigger) on it , both on the feedback master. This button appears on my resulting slides as expected, and even jumps to the next screen when the button's clicked. Great!
What it DOESN'T do is HIDE the feedback layer. This is a problem, especially if you do a quiz review 'cos the feedback is still on the question screens and you can't get rid of it to see what the question text and options are. If I remove the jump trigger and just have the hide layer trigger it doesn't do anything.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any clues.
PeteB
Hi Pete,
The Review element of a quiz is actually a new layer, and provides other feedback elements such as the correct/incorrect banner, that are not currently able to be edited. You'll see some information in this blog post on how to modify that layer a bit further.
Is this only not working on the Review layer, or on all of your correct/incorrect layers as well? If the latter, are you able to share the Storyline file here with us so that we can take a look?
I have created custom buttons for our corporate templates according to the process above and they work great except if you want to do branching or if the pages are not in sequence. For example, if I want to change the order of the questions and instead of going to the 'next slide' I want the custom continue button I created on the Feedback Master to go to a specific slide, I can't do this within the specific slide; I can only change it on the master which would affect all of the question slides. This is also problematic if I want to direct the learner to one slide if they get the question correct and a different slide if they get the question incorrect (making use of the Storyline branching functionality for assessments). The trigger this is tied to is for the button which has been dragged off the screen out of the view of the learner, not the new button I created and I can't tell it to assign this trigger to my custom button. We have been creating hotspots over our buttons just so that we can adjust the trigger but this interferes with the hover states. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how did you work around it?
Hello everyone! There are some really useful tips in this thread, but I'm still coming across a "Hide Layer' issue. In my case, I'm allowing learners to have two tries at the quiz questions. However, the custom "Try Again" button that I created in the master feedback slide (using the directions above) does not work when clicked. The other triggers on the correct and incorrect slides work, allowing the learner to advance to the next question, so I'm a bit puzzled. Any ideas?
Hi there Will!
Would you mind sharing your .story file so we can take a look at your Feedback Master set-up? You can attach it right here in this thread using the Add Attachment button.
Hi Alyssa! I can't uploading the file I'm working on because it contains sensitive information, but let me see if I can replicate the issue in a generic file and I'll upload that once I get a chance. Thanks for your speedy reply.
