More Neophyte Questions About Storyline

I am creating an e-learning course on crocheting for a class. I have 2 slides containing photos. Because of the orientation of the photos, there are white bars along the sides of each photo. Are these white bars bad or good from a design perspective? If they're bad, what do I do with them and how do I do it? This is really only my second day with Storyline, and I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm not a graphic artist, nor am I a technophile. I need all the help I can get.
Thanks, Joan
P.S. I've attached screenshots of the 2 slides.

Hi Joan
if you are wanting to tone down the white background, you could put a rectangle shape in a colour you pick from the picture and then tone it down with a 50-75% transparency - send it to back so that the picture sits on top then maybe add some shadow or perspective to the pics.
Hi Joan,
I will leave the 'design' ideas up to our community, but if the images do have extra spacing on the slides that is white - have you looked at the options here for how to crop an image?
