More than one pass rate in a quiz?

Oct 20, 2017

Hi,

We have a request from a client in regards to the assessment at the end of their project. They require that certain questions HAVE to be answered correctly, whilst there will be an pass rate (ie 80%) for the remainder.

For example 10 questions in total. 5 specific questions have to be correct, plus any 3 of the remaining 5, for the course to be passed.

Is there a way to do this? I spend most of my time in Adobe Captivate, so Storyline is fairly new to me.

Thanks.

Hello there Mark!

Very interesting question, thanks for posting here in the community! I'm always fascinated by questions related to scoring and pass/fail rates (#instructionaldesignnerd).

Storyline allows you to use multiple results slides in your course, so this may the way to achieve what you need. Your quiz can be broken up into 2 parts (each with its own results slide and passing score.) You can also have a Final Results that tallies up the scores of those other 2 results slides in your course. The Final Results slide is what will pass along the score to your LMS.

What you could do is have part 1 of your quiz (the 5 questions that learned absolutely need to get correct) with a pass scoring/results slide of 100%

Then you have part 2 of your quiz (the 5 questions where learners need to get 3/5) with its own pass score of say 60% (5 questions, each worth 20 points = 100 points, they get 3 correct they get 60 points, aka 60%, so they pass)

Then you could have a final Results slide where you select the option that "Users must pass each quiz" to ensure that to pass the quiz the learner needs to get 100% on the first part and 60% (3/5 correct questions) on the second part.

Here's an example with 10 questions like you mentioned in your post.

I've attached an example .story file where I've set it up. If you don't want your learners to see the results slide after part 1 and part 2, but only see the final result slide, you can do that. You can have learners skip right over the results slide and go from question 5 to question 6 and it will still get tallied in the background.

Hope this helps :)
