Motion Path and the Size/Position Panel

Sep 11, 2015

Hello all,

I've read in several posts that you can control the final location of a motion path by selecting the motion path, using Ctrl>Shift>Enter to launch the Size and Position panel, and then inputting the desired coordinates.

As you can see from the attached .story file and screen shots, that doesn't seem to work for me. And in another "what the heck is going on?" moment, the size goes from 128 x 128 to 416 x 592! (without changing size on the screen)

What am I missing? I'm sure this is user error, but I can't figure out how the user is erroring. Too much tequila for lunch?

Thanks for any input.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for reaching out here and sharing your file. I took a look and the motion path seemed to behave as I expected going from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. I didn't see the same properties you showed in the size/position panel - mine were set at 128 for height and width, and 0 for the horizontal and vertical set ups.

In terms of how it should work, there are a few users who discussed it here and shared some thoughts and examples. If Storyline is behaving oddly in general for you, with the duplication of the height and width, I'd want to make sure you were working on local project files as detailed here and then I'd also suggest looking at the repair of Storyline.

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I agree, the motion path does behave as it should. (moves from top-left to bottom-right)  But, the numbers in the Size and Position panel don't match with where the square ends up. (please see my screen shots vs. where the square actually ends up)

But, I just figured something out. For some reason, the size (Height and Width) actually becomes the new position coordinates for the motion path. (Height is the y-axis and Width is the x-axis) They aren't actually the coordinates, but the change in coordinates from the original position.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, but I'm still getting the Height and Width as the change in coordinates of the object on the motion path.

Any thoughts as to why that might be happening?

Thanks.

And here's an additional thing that will make you go "hmmmm...."  If I have the Size and Position panel displayed, and my motion path ends at coordinates that would be a negative delta to the original position (above or to the left), and I change the numbers in the size panel, the original object moves, not the end point of the motion path.

Since you can't enter a negative number in the size boxes, the numbers are always positive. But, if they SHOULD be negative (based on coordinates from the original position), and I change them, the original object moves, not the end point of the motion path.

Hmmmmm.......

Things that make you go hmmmm....

So, in my open copy of your file, the height and width are always the same for that object, regardless of where I place it - 128 pixel/128 pixels. The position will show as 592 by 412 which is what you're image shows in the size set up if I move a copy of your object to that bottom corner, so that does seem to match the position element of the end of your motion path. So it seems we're seeing things a bit differently across the board?

But no matter what, I always see the position element set as the original object in the 0, 0 spot in the top left hand corner. And the size element is based on the size of the object - those things are not changing, as expected as they refer to that original object - not where it'll end up.

I admittedly don't spend a ton of time on motion paths, but am seeing things differently than you described. You mentioned already repairing Storyline, can you confirm you're working on local project files as described here? If you continue to see the odd size/position elements we'll want to take a better look into the set up you've got, so please reach out to our Support team here.
