Mouse over variables need to be able to go to next slide when media completes on slide layers
Feb 26, 2016
Hello all! I am not sure if this can be done, but I am hoping it can be.
I am working on for lab safety and I am making it as interactive as possible. I looked at this discussion: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/mouse-hovered-over-function-and-proceeding-to-next-slide
and it is similar to want I want to do...but not exactly. I tried to follow it, but I need to take it a step further for what I want to do.
I want to have the learner hover over each of the signs, which have shapes at 99% transparency to show different layers. When the learners are finished hovering over each of the shapes and the media completes for each layer, I want the slide to advance automatically to slide 1.2. I am setting up a game almost to where they need to do certain steps before proceeding to the next portion. In this case, they need to be able to read the signs and go through each bit of instruction before going into the lab.
What are the variables and triggers I need to set up for this to happen? I am stumped. Thanks in advance!

Hi Jacob!
Would you be able to share your .story file so that you can get some assistance with your design?
Unfortunately, I can't share it. I work for a Biotech company and due to regulations with the FDA, we can't share unapproved information until the project is complete and approved for external viewing.
I have attached a storyline project with the information stripped out. It just contains the basics with what I'm trying to accomplish with the variables and triggers that I think will work. Please let me know if I should change anything. Thanks!
Oh, that looks great Jacob! I think you've got it. I'm not sure if it would be helpful to show the seekbar as a visual, or why you do not want the user to click on the selections to prevent them not fully viewing the layer - but I do like what you are doing. Good luck with your project.
Unfortunately, it didn't work. :( I can't figure out why. We don't want them to click them because when you view a sign, you don't touch it...you just look at it. I'm trying to make it as immersive as possible since policies and procedures aren't that exciting. In addition, I had the seekbar selected to be shown, so I'm not sure why it's not being shown or why that option was changed.
It wasn't selected when I took a look at the player properties in your sample. I actually took a look first to make sure it made sense before I shared my thoughts. That was the only initial thought. I know you probably aren't telling the users how many seconds to wait, but I would want a visual indicator if there was a reason I could not proceed if that makes sense. Otherwise, they may feel 'stuck'.
Okay I will put the seekbar in...but that's not what I need help with..
For some reason, my triggers aren't "triggering" and I'm not sure why.
I think I've misunderstood then Jacob. Your course worked great for me. I had to hover over each shape and then the slide advanced. If I didn't hover over one for long enough, I had to go back for it to complete. The seekbar was just a thought.
Can you explain how to replicate the issue that you are having as I must have misunderstood.
On my actual project, each layer has sound and pictures. When the time lines end, the states will switch to visited...like it does in my practice module. However, it doesn't proceed to the next slide as it should. The same triggers are used. The only difference is there is media on the layers in my project. I tried also having the states change to visited when media completes as well. Still no luck.
Hmmm. Do you have the 'visited' state as a visual so that you can see if that is happening as you expect? Such as what I've updated in your attached file.
Would you be able to share privately for us to take a look? I understand if you cannot share publicly in the forum, but thought I'd ask :)
I figured it out! I did what you recommended in my own file and the one object was switching to a visited state for the wrong object.
In addition, I wouldn't have been able to share it privately either, but thanks for your help! I appreciate it. :)
Awesome! So glad that was able to assist Jacob. Thanks for the update and good luck with the rest of your project.
