Moved slides = lost variables

Jan 08, 2016

I moved some slides into a new scene - only to find most of the variables I'd set up had stopped working. Specifically, the numbering had been altered so they didn't work.

Is this a bug and is there a way around it? It's pretty heartbreaking to lose so much work.

Hi Katherine

variables are global to the file so they can be triggered from any slide and reset from any slide in the file.  Not sure I understanding what you mean by the numbering has been altered.

Do you want to upload your .story file and tell us what is specifically not working on which slides - might be easier to help you.

Hi Wendy

Thanks so much for your comment.

What happened was that I moved a slide with a slider on it into a new scene. The original slide used the automatically created slider1 variable.

When I looked at the slide in the new scene, the variable, instead of being called slider1, was now called slider3. A new variable, slider2, had also appeared. None of the triggers I'd created using the slider1 variable worked although the triggers were still there.

My workflow involves moving slides into new scenes quite a lot, as I use new scenes as to test short sections of my courses. If this is going to upset variables then I'll need to rethink my workflow.

I hope that makes more sense! Does this sound like a common occurence?

Ah ok...that makes sense.  I can't say I have had this issue but maybe I can help you understand the logic.

When you insert a slider on one slide it's object name (in the timeline) is called slider 1 and a variable is automatically created so for the first slider created variable = slider1.

On your next slide when you insert a slider it's object name (unless you change it) on the timeline is also called slider 1 - it is relative to the slide you are on BUT the variable SL creates will be slider2.

Next slide, if you created two sliders on one slide the first object name would be slider 1, the second object name would be slider 2 but the variables created by SL would now be slider3 and slider4.

Variables list

Perhaps it might work for you to rename the variables in the variables list so you can easily see which one you are referencing.

Hope that makes sense
