MP4 Won't Progressively download

Mar 17, 2015

Does anyone have MP4 progressive downloading issue?

I have a Storyine project which has a bunch of videos imported. It seems the video won't play until fully downloaded which takes forever...

I tried to solve this by following this link:

http://www.articulate.com/support/quizmaker-09/mp4-movie-doesnt-begin-playing-until-it-has-fully-downloaded

I tried qt-faststart.exe to fix the mp4 videos, but it keeps giving me this message: "last atom in file was not a moov atom". I found this from another place saying, "moov atom needs to be located at the beginning of the file, or else the entire file will have to be downloaded before it begins playing". Does anyone have any idea how to put the "moov atom" at the beginning?

Another option from the link above is converting mp4 to FLV, and then re-insert the video. My question is, since Storyline is going to re-compress the video and generate into mp4 file once published, does this mean Storyline published videos can support progressive download?

 Thanks!!!

Hi Dongxue,

Yes, Storyline does allow for content to progressively download, so learners won't have to wait for them to be downloaded to their computers before playback begins. In regards to the article you linked, here is the Storyline version of the same thing, and converting it to FLV will allow Storyline to encode it as an MP4 with the correct set up upon publish.

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for your reply! I think my MP4 video is progressively downloading now, but when I jump forward, it still takes a fairly long time to start that slide. Does this mean Storyline is still somehow trying to load the previous slides even I've jumped forward?

Also. is there a critical file size limit to the the published package so that it can play smoother while progressively downloading the content?

We really want to keep the quality as high as possible so we used the highest quality setting (9) when publishing the module. But I will try lower the setting a little bit and see how that comes.

Thank You!!!

Hi Dongxue,

There isn't an overall file size limit within Storyline, but it may be a limit within your LMS or hosting site, so you'll want to confirm with them. Also, loading a larger file will generally take more time, also dependent on your internet speed.

Are you jumping forward before the first slide has finished loading? If so, then as the progressive loading is taking place it may not have finished that slide yet. I'm happy to take a look and see how it plays on my end if you'd like to share a link to the course here?

Thank you Ashley! We've decided to go with the standard settings when publishing the package since there is no big big difference between the standard settings and the highest quality.

I was using qt-faststart.exe in order to correct the format my mp4 videos but it didn't work for me, giving me this error message "last atom in file was not a moov atom", so i cannot move the "moov atom" to the beginning of the file to support progressive download (that's just my understanding of the error message...).

Then we found this:

So far it has been working pretty well for me and we did found the "moov atom" at the beginning of the mp4 file. We've did a few rounds of testing and it really helps!

Just in case somebody else may need it.
